  • Charging system capacity (watts)

Good day I have a 2004 with stock charging and wanting to install some heated grips and want to know what the stock charging output is. I know the 2005 and up have a higher capacity but wondering about what I currently have. Thanks!

    I believe:
    The "99 thru 04" have a 21 amp, approximately 270 watt system.
The "05" and newer bikes have a 30 amp, approximately 380 watt system.
If you run auxiliary lights that both are 50 watt and the heated grips, you'll be pushing the systems limits.
I run 30 watt bulbs in my auxiliary lights and are bright enough for me. LEDs would be better.

The yami fac srv'c man i had for the 06 silverado i used you have said it was 28amps at something like 4 or 5k rpm.

I just looked & the fac srv'c man for my current 2012 Silverado says it's got 33amps @ 5k rpm.

LOL!!!,the frigging rev limiter wont let the motor rev 5k rpm!

BTW,JC,thats a real nice looking R* you have there!

Would replacing all the lighting to LED's help? Also, would a higher cranking amp battery help? Last question, would a newer type stator fix the issue?

Hey Duke thanks. I only run the auxillary lights at night and they are 30w bulbs. Looking at the Oxford set for cruisers. Says it draws less than 4 amps. Anyone use heated grips?

            4 amps x 13 volts = 52 watts.

Thanks Scottw for the info and comment. I have to thank the clinic for making it what it is. Plenty of great looking bikes on here.

Drums I was thinking of changing out headlight, aux and signal lights to led and may do it over winter. Will only upgrade charging when it fails. I dont think a bigger cranking battery will help. The output of the charging system is only what it is.

Ah, dude! Lol. They are referring to stator rotor speed which is geared 2:1 off the crank.

Engine is loafing @ about 2,500 for that to happen.

I have been looking for heated grips for our bikes too but have not found any. I did just installed the heat demon internal bar heated system but I just don’t think they are going to the job very well when the temps get down in the 30’s. The Oxford grips would be better but I don’t see the ones that would fit the throttle side with cable. Let me know if you find any.

                LOL!!!

                Caught me sleeping!

I should have known better since it didn't make sense to rate amps output at higher rpm then rev limit hence it being geared off crank @ 2:1 ratio.

                Tks for reminding me.

Is it possible to put a stator from an 05+ into an 01?
                  that would help I'd think.
I've heard good things about Ricksmotorsports and thier upgrades stators. Anyone ever use thier stuff?

The upgrade, stator and regulator, is plug n play.

OEM is preferred, but there might be some folks that have other brands that’ll hold up.

I've never heard anything good about Ricks. I've heard alot about ricks and it was "ALL" bad as in don't do it. I would rather install a used OEM than a Ricks rebuild. The 05 and newer is a direct fit but get stator and reg/rec from the 05/newer not just the stator.

+ 1 on the Rick's stator. Been on here 6 years and can't remember anyone having anything good to say about them. Same for the rectifier. Chinese one may be lots cheaper, but it has been known to allow damage to other components when it fails. Spend the money, or check Ebay or your favorite M/C junkyard for used. One of our members, Horsehammer, just recently stated he had his early model stator rewound to 2005+ specs. That might be something to look in to as well.

On the XS 650 forum that I am on, Ricks stuff are not any better on those bikes either. OEM in my mind.

                            Food for thought.

Why would a stator go bad in the first place? There are no moving parts other than a magnetized rotor spinning around it. Following links are some informative reads for those that seem to have dreaded charging problems.

Failed regulator can really be bad for the charging system. Very important to have a volt meter to be able to see what is happening and stop before something else fails...stator and or battery. Good article Ron thanks!

                                +1 on a multimeter.

They’re affordable and necessary when tracking down any electrical problems.

How else are you going to ‘see’ voltage and resistance where it’s needed?

Look at the thickness of winding wire and the insulation on the winding wire on both aftermarket and oem stators, its obvious how much better yamaha builds them, i would buy a used oem before i would buy an aftermarket stator, insulation breaking down is usually what causes a stator to fail, sometimes people see the shiny copper windings on electrical components and don't realize that the wire is insulated with something you can see through like shellac or varnish

There is no cheapin out on parts this critical to a bikes operation. I put it up there with tires and brake pads.
