  • Fuel Gauge is dead

Alrighty, The topic says it all. Fuel Gauge is No Bueno. Now before i start pulling things apart to have a look, i'm just wondering if this is a common issue, and what it most likely is? I Mean is it a full replace the sender problem, or is it something i can replace a small part and away i go?

If you have a engine light blinking 8 time it is the sender unit. If not blinking check all connections and follow the wires to check for corrosion. Sender units are kind of a common issue.

As davej said, they are notorious and with today's ethanol blend fuels only seems more prevalent. Both my bikes are currently having issues but haven't got into them yet. I've kept a couple of links related to this that may be of interest.

      One from here. https://www.roadstarclinic.com/forum...nit-adjustment

If your low fuel light is NOT blinking, your gauge needle might be sticking. In that case, you'll have to take your gauge apart enough so that you can get to the needles. Once you get to that point, spray the pivot area of both the fuel gauge needle and the speedo (might as well, you've got it torn down that far) with ISOPROPAL ALCOHOL electronics spray-DO NOT use any other kind of electronics cleaning spray-it will strip the paint off your gauge face! Don't ask how I discovered THAT tidbit! Rotate the needle for the full sweep of motion while spraying the alcohol cleaner at the pivot point(s). Let the gauge assembly dry. Then, using a light oil like sewing machine oil or fishing reel oil,put a couple of drops on the pivot. Again, rotate the needle(s) for their full sweep a couple of times. Blot up excess oil with a tissue. You gan now plug the instruments into the wiring harness (if you unplugged it), and turn the ignition key. The needles SHOULD make a full sweep. If not, repeat the proceedure.
I have had to do this on my 2007 Road Star Midnight several times, because whatever oil used to lubricate the gauges from the factory became sticky, over time. Also, sometimes when one or the other needle doesn't make a full sweep, I have to turn the key off and give the gauge cluster a good smack to jar it loose, because even with the new lubricant, sometimes the needles still stick. (Wiping the posts the needles rest on with a alcohol soaked swab is also a good iea!)

This is not only a common problem, it may well be THE common problem among Roadstars. Luckily, There/s always that big hole in the top of the tank that never fails.
