  • ECU unit (piece of s...) problem

    Hey guys!

Been a while, mostly since there has ben alot of personal shit to deal with and with my rodie, shit what to say...
There was an short circuit somewhere, a wire with bad insulation most likely rubbing against the frame.
It came smoke from somewhere around the battery...
I located the wire (was in that area) and was pretty satisfied, thinking that was the issue.

Anyways, changed some bad wires, ignition switch, rebuilt the carburetor, changed the intake manifold, and then.. full of anticipation i turned the key, pushed the button,
engine turns just fine, but won´t fire up.
There is nooo sign of spark at all.

I THINK the pickup coil is fine, from what i´ve found to read and checking it with a multimeter.
And since the starter spins, i´m pretty sure that it´s not the neutral switch or the kickstand switch etc.

So i was kinda convinced that it had to be a short circuit in the ECU unit (witch is located in the area the smoke came from).
And since i probably have all kinds of diagnoses that probably don´t even have names yet, I could not resist to try to open that piece of s....

So... this is kinda where i´m at. so i got some questions... lol

Does anybody know a good way to get rid of all the putty thing?
If i don´t find the issue inside the ECU - does anybody have any other ideas?

Has anyone ever tried to open up / repair their ECU?

There must be a way to delete it? I mean it is only necissary for the ignition right?
Some wierdo must have deleted it and found another way to get signal to the ignition?
    PLEASE say so lol..

Even if the ECU wasn´t the issue to begin with it will most likely be one of them now!

But a used CDI (actually TCI technically) for $50 (if 1600, $200 If 1700) But a new Dyna 3000 for $300. Those are your best options.

It's a transitorized ignition system and I don't think there is any reasonable way to repair it.

PLEASE tell me where to find a used one for under $100 to a 1600?
You would really make my life sooo much better

All i found on ebay is like $300 for a used one.
And then you have to add the fact that i live in Sweden, so when shipping, taxes and customs are added almost everything we buy from the states i the price x 2.
And i dont want to spend over $500, or want.. I dont have that to spend... lol

I've ran across another issue about this.. And i bet you are the guy that has the answer!
Did some research and found out that American models are named 4WM8230500 (says J4T098 .... 714WM00 on the box)
My European models name is 5JA8230500 (says J4T100 .... 715JA00 on the box)

Do you know the difference or if they are interchangeable?

All 99 to 07 are interchangeable, not sure on the EFI 08 and up.

I do not know what the difference would be between the CDI units. I can't imagine it would be very significant.

Well, you where thinking right, but it didn´t help
It says "US only" and even if they would ship here, when you add all the fee´s my actual price would have been $430.
I hate living in EU lol
