  • What Relay To Use For An Accessory Horn?

Trying to install an accessory horn on my 2006 Road Star Midnight. Can anyone help with information regarding what number 12V relay to use that is available online or at the major brands of auto parts stores? (or a link) Thanks!

There are basically two different styles but work the same. A 4 pin and 5 pin. The 4 pin is smaller and might be better suited if mounting location is tight. The common theme is there is power in and power out (pins 30 & 87) this is going to be your batter to relay and relay to horn positive connection.

The other two pins are your relay ground (it's an electrical switch after all) and it's power/trigger source (pins 85 & 86)

The 5th pin (87A) is connected to pin 30 when the relay is at rest. An example of this might be for a high/low beam light where one or the other is always on when the power source (not the trigger) is applied.

Here is a accessory relay for an '01 Pontiac Bonneville (I had one so know it used the smaller 4 pin relay). Under $8 at my local parts store.

If you're looking to use your existing horn switch and wiring, I believe the horn is powered when the key is on and the switch actually grounds the horn to complete the circuit. So you could use the exiting horn wires as the trigger power and ground on pins 85 & 86. I'm sure some other members have done this upgrade as well and can also confirm this.

Hairless Hippy it wouldn't be hard to wire one up that way. Taking the relay example above, bring unswitched power from the battery to 30 and 86. 87 to the horn and 85 to the ground side of the factory horn circuit.

I'm assuming you have an aftermarket horn on your bike?
