How to trouble shoot starter problem. I only hear a click when I engage the starter button. New battery installed. What process do I follow to determine if the starter is bad or what else could it be? Thanks

Was it just ckicking when you went out and replaced the battery? What is the voltage reading with a VOM of the new battery? -

Looking at your profile it appears you're working on a 2007 bike. As Mr. Miyagi says, lets start with some basics. A test of voltage resting and also while the starter button is engaged will give a bit of information regarding the battery health. Make sure your connections to the battery cables are clean and tight at all ends. The negative cable will attach to the oil tank. So make sure those are clean and tight. The positive will run to the left side cover on a carb. bike. Under there is the starter relay. Make sure those connections are clean and tight. You may listen to see if that's where the click is coming from (most likely). The starter relay are a known weak spot in the starting circuit. With the bike in NEUTRAL (can't stress this enough) you can take a screwdriver or something similar and short the relay and see if the engine turns over. If so, it's the internal contacts to the relay that's at fault. If not you need to work your way down to the starter. The starter can get a carbon build-up inside. The starter can be disassembled and cleaned. Check the brush condition and holding plate while in there. If you're buying a new starter relay it's advised to go with OEM
as some of the Ebay replacements may be subpar and not last with the high load these starters need.

A little late on this post and I know it sounds stupid but check your safety switches like the one on your kickstand..Comment

The Yamaha OEM brush holder or brush plate is made of brass that goes from the positive through bolt to two of the brushes. It is very common for that brass to crack at the 90° bend and cause a voltage drop and when the second one does the same thing all you get is a click. Typically it starts out not too bad and gets worse over time. I replace the brush plates with Rick's starters 70-507 I've done it like three times already on a couple different bikes and I'm have memorized the part number. I replaced with OEM once in the next year I had to replace them again. The ricks are made out of steel. Be sure to seal the bolt that goes through well with o-rings and or sealant to keep moisture out because that starter is right behind the front wheel.Comment

my opinion is to check for voltage right at the starter when you push the starter button. If you have voltage then you have a bad starter, just that simple. If you don't have voltage take off the left side cover to access the starter relay, you should always have voltage to 1 side of the relay. if you do, push the starter button and check to see if you have voltage to the opposite lug on the relay. If you don't then you have a bad starter relay which is very common. If no voltage to either side of the relay check, tighten and clean all battery cable connections. The click you hear is probably the decomp solenoid.👍 1Comment
