Decompression solenoid stays activated and smokes

    Couldn't it be a short in the start button switch? Wild guess there

      Pretty sure a shorted start swtch would be apparent as the starter spins and continues til something gives up….
      fuel sender unit would not effect the decompression solenoid… if you have any doubt… disconnect the sender unit at plug under the fuel tank…

      of course… one last test would be ..

      ohm the DCS wire which goes to ECM with the ECM plugged in…. If low ohms… unplug the harness at the ECM…. If still low ohms… your wire is shorted… if ohms goes to infinty…. Points directly at the ECM…
      that test is simplified ….. i would probably run multiple tests including the removal of the starter motor wire and simulate using start switch as if i was starting the bike… ie:you should hear the starter relay click as if it wanted to start…. Safeties normal, nuetral gear… etc… etc… etc…

      I do not think i have ever heard of the ECM bad on just the DCS circuit…. I have been reading on the clinic since i bought my bike in 2006…. 16 years without any hint of this particular issue with an ECM… i would probably exhaust all possible tests with a volt meter and signal tracing just to be absolutely sure it is bad…. Of course i am an old stubborn fool with a very tight wallet….

        Fuel gauge issues are common on these bikes. Probably unrelated to your other issue.

          Just my thoughts.
          Since there have been other owners/mechanics of this bike, make sure that it is wired correctly. Someone could have wired it up wrong.
          You will need to trace the wires.
          Why am I saying this, you say it comes on with the key, not when you try to start. There is alot of wiring that is switched 12volts under that tank.
          Sounds to me it is wired wrong

            Wire tracing has been mentioned before…. The OP was insistant that the tracing has been performed… the original issues mentioned were along the line of intermittant starting issues, bad DCS, and a bad fuel level sending unit…. Switches tested, new spark plugs, electrical connections cleaned and checked…. Etc…
            the last post on his last thread mentioned all issues resolved except the DCS solenoid which is what this current thread involves…

            I believe he might be close to resolving this using a volt meter…. My ‘last test’ suggestion would confirm/eliminate a bad wire to the ECM…(i assumed he did a continuity check from the DCS plug harness to the ECM plug harness to confirm the proper wire is intact and has not been incorrectly spliced)

            . He has stated that the wire harness is intact and has not been butchered… he has also traced the wire to the corrugated plastic wire loom pipe… i have put this much together from the two threads….

            The disjointed responses have confused me as to what order his troubleshooting techniques have occured and what exactly was done to resolve the prior starting issues…. Makes it difficult to offer a step by step process to identify and resolve with the least amount of effort…

            and i am not so sure i havent ticked him off to some degree…. I do seem to have that effect on people…. Lol…!

              Tcontrol, you seem to be well organized and experienced and you seem to give a linear approach to looking for an issue and finding a resolution. I am not beyond looking at something but I have a good man in my town who I trust and know that he will do me right and that causes me to not have a reason to do much on my bikes. I do like to learn though.

              Well I think you've given great suggestions with very detailed steps along the way. I applaud you. I know it can be frustrating when you try to help to this level and the poster with the issue goes off on another direction/tangent (not implying that to this instance, but I remember another thread not that log ago that did).
