Starting problem

When i first start my 03 Midnight (after having it on the trickle charger) it starts fine with a 3 second starter roll over before it runs. But after riding for an hour or so... i shut it off and then try to restart and the starter rolls over once and stops. If i hold the starter button in for 5 seconds it will start to roll over slowly 3 or 4 times and then it starts. The battery was replaced a year ago...always on a smart charger, Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

get the battery check and clean tighten all connections. You might even want to take the starter apart and clean out the carbon dust, clean the commutator and check the brushes. If that don't work contact me for upgraded 4 gauge battery cables.

All connections clean and tightened. I just recently reinstalled the battery from winter storage and had it on a smart charger. I was thinking the starter also. I had it apart 2 years ago and cleaned out a considerable amount of dust in there. A wire upgrade sounds like a great idea!

Strangest thing... took Black Beauty out for a ride yesterday and stopped at several places...she started up with no issues with 1 roll over on the starter. Hmmm.

Yup my 05 does pretty much the same. So I guess Im going to follow what you did.

as usual, check starter brush plate holder for cracks in the brass. failed starts is what comes before no starts at all.....
ive given up on the OEM and get ricks brush plate kits. 70-507 made of plated steel
