  • Question about 1600 - 1700 Stators

These two pictures are taken directly from the Yamaha dealers page. From an 01 and an 07 they are showing the stator output being basically the same. Now I thought the 05 and up were supposed to be better?

Hey we have a plethora of errors in the Yamaha procedure shop manuals. The others will chime in here. Alternator /RR outputs are well documented here.

I gotcha. I was trying to look at service manuals as well but Yamaha wasn't showing the 1700 modes. These were just the yearly updates/specs. So I was just curious.

First that is a Yamaha dealer page, not the service manual specs. IIRC the 05 and newer are at about 28 amps, not whats listed on that sheet. Second the 05 and newer dont burn out like the 99 to 04 did. Better reliability is the main reason to switch them out, a few more amps is secondary, unless you are into a lot of lights and a big amp stereo.

Here is a snapshot of the service manual for the '08 and above.

Does the stator spin faster than the crankshaft? Because the numbers are based on 5,000 RPM.

If I recall they're on a 2 to 1 gearing. So engine RPM at 2500 when testing.

          • #7
Brad is correct. I always thought that was a stupid way of printing it. Why not just tell how many engine RPM to test at? There have been many that didn't know and tried to run the engine at 5000 rpm not realizing the rev limiter won't allow you to even get that high. Why do they have to write it in a riddle for someone to figure out that the stator spins faster than engine rpm?

Most likely the guy writing the manual is an engineer and not a mechanic.

I would agree with Brad on that!

Thanks everyone. Like I said I tried looking into it through my Yamaha dealer page and couldn't get the actual shop manual for the newer ones. No worries, I was just curious.

so 05-07 is 28 amps, 08 and later is 33 amps, big question is, are they interchangeable?, i know 05-07 fits into 99-04's, but do 08 and later also fit previous bikes, and the RR has to match corrrect?

The writers for the technical specifications are listing what the charging system produces at a given RPM of the stator rotor as most are mounted to the crank. Someone forgot to mention they are geared for double the engine speed on some models.

Still waiting to find out if the stators and RR from the fuelys will fit in the carbies. And clymers also says 5000 RPM.

I was under the impression that the stators for 1600 and 1700 were interchangeable but change the rectifier? also

You are correct at least up to 07. Now that it has been brought up I also wonder if 08-newer will fit with the older models

                      • #15
So what I read in the archives, they are interchangeable, just change both the stator and the reg/rect with OEM parts

I guess you could start looking at part numbers of the components that the stator bolts to and any other part number in that area to see if they match part numbers for other yr 1700's. If those part numbers match I would assume they would work. It might also have a different plug that if different could be easily changed.

                                  Same part #'s that matter.

2006 Part # 5VN-81410-00-00 which supersedes to 5VN-81410-01-00 (Which is the current and active part #)

                                  2008 Part # 5VN-81410-20-00

So there is a difference somewhere
