  • Passing lamp draw

I have a new to me 2004 roadstar with oem passing lamps. One bulb was blown so I have not turned them on yet. Put in new bulb today and tested them out. I noticed that without them on I my voltage reader says 13.9 to 14.3 while riding. When I turn them on it drops to around 12.9. Not knowing anything about electrical, is this good, bad?

    Thanks for any info

What is the bulb wattage that you are using for the driving lights?

My none OEM driving lights came with 50 watt halogen lights, and to keep from loading up the electrical system, I replaced the bulbs with 35 watt bulbs. They work well, but I know that LED lights are more than likely the way to go. I'm just slow to jump on them.

    100 watt bulb / 13 volts = 7.70 amps x 2 = 15.4 amps.
    50 watt bulb / 13 volts = 3.85 amps x 2 = 7.7 amps.
    35 watt bulb / 13 volts = 2.70 amps x 2 = 5.4 amps.

Yep sounds like you have high wattage bulbs in it. I would bring it back down to 35W bulbs or LED's and save the charging system from running maxed out all the time.

Yea, the 35 watters are kinder to charging system as well as the wiring.

Unless the bike’s had an upgrade, the ‘04 stator and regulator had less output than the ‘05 and later.

Thank you all for the replies. Yup, it's a 55w bulb. I will drop down to 35w for each and then upgrade all to led's when I can. Is there a led system that I can easily swap into the Headlight and fog lights with minimum hickups? Appreciate all the information.

Yes they are. It comes with installation instructions. Discard the HD bracket you won't need it. The headlight is plug and play so no need to splice. Remove the HD connector pigtail from the passing lights and connect directly to the positive and ground wires inside the housing.

ive been running oem stock bulbs in 2 2004's for a decade, one is daily driver, short jaunts, and 2-6 starts a day. just got a get good battery tho. deka deka deka deka deka, and upgraded battery cables, and an extra ground strap? those oem Passing lamps are NOTOTIOUS for being NEFARIOUS -shorting out on their TORTUOUS journey thru the UNSCRUPULOSLY designed fittings. you could have a weak drain there. on each of mine, i tear them down and put the smallest heat t shrink, and carefullt reASSemble using the house electrishun's monkey snot(wire lubricant). I DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER ACCESSORIES
