  • Odometer trouble

Hello all, new to the forums and to the road star. Just purchased a 2001 road star for $500 bucks the other day. It has been sitting a couple of years. Going through it and got it running, carb cleaned, cables lubed, speedo needles unstuck, oil change, new plugs and fluids, new battery and starter solenoid. One of the last issues I am having is the tiny digital odometer screen isn't working.

Everything else works except the fuel sender but that's no problem.

I've tried searching over and over for info on that little screen.. I cant find anything.. if I shade the sun and get up close it looks like it has "|= |=" on it or "FF" but displays nothing else. I'm wondering how many miles are on this bike and would really like to fix it or maybe replace just that little digital screen.

Does anyone know anything about it or where to look? All fuses are good. Grounds are good. I'm lost on what to do.

Sounds like a great deal on an unloved R!

Thanks. It is a beast. I had an 07 Harley street Bob and thought it was big. But this road star is perfect for a 6'3" 300lb gorilla like me. Amazing how much torque it has. Even at my size though it is hard to turn at low speeds with the stock handle bars. Definitely need some ape hangers of some sort to be comfortable.

Is there no way to replace the little screen itself? Not looking to spend that much when everything else works. Wonder if anyone would trade with just a little cash on top lol

Probably buy a used speedo from someone parting it out a lot less than buying new. Be patient. One will turn up.

Be a former Yamaha Certified Electronics tech, the display itself is doing exactly what is supposed to do. The computer that drives the display is bad. And unless you have the actual circuit board schematics you will just be chasing your tail.
And since this is a computer chip problem, you will never know the actual mileage.

So I actually ended up taking it completely apart and found the LCD is connected to the board with zebra connectors. Cleaned them and the LCD with alcohol and put it back together. It is now displaying about half of the little cells instead of only 4 or so. I'm going to take it back apart and see if I can get a better connection.

Sounds like maybe you need to throw it in a tub of rice.

Hey Jhume20, Thats sounds hopeful... I also have a 2001, my screen works but the only way to see it, is in pitch darkness. During the day, outside you see numbers there, but aren't visible. only putting the bike in the garage, closing the door, complete darkness, and turn the key, is the only way to read the mileage. Gonna try what you did, it might help! I got nothing to lose... Thanks

I haven't seen much on this site for repairs on the LCD. Maybe someone will come up with a fix and share their repairs. I'd like to see any fixes out there.

@Azuqui sounds like this may be the same issue you're having?
