    Hi Everyone,I’m new to this forum, and I was reading the issue that Moose had with his fuel sending unit/ fuel gage. I have the exact issue going on with a 2001 Roadstar that I’m fixing up for my Son. I replaced the sending unit and the needle goes full swing when the key is turned to on, then goes back to hit the stop pin, then just barely comes off the pin and remains on E. The tank is about half full. I tried the negative battery disconnect trick and that didn’t work. On a side note, I tested the old sending unit out of the tank with an ohm meter and it seemed to work fine. Before I installed the new sending unit, the gage was stuck on Full. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Does the yellow fuel light illuminate or flash? If not, we need to check the resistance through the sending unit. Disconnect the green plug under the tank and connect an ohm meter set at ohms X 10, positive probe to the green wire and the negative probe to the black/blue wire. With the float in the full position you should read 11 to 13 ohms. With the float in the empty position you should read 140 to 143 ohms. Also, Moose reported back to me that he had the exact same issue that you are experiencing (replaced sending unit and it read empty) and just took it for a ride and it started reading correctly. If your bike is operational you might try riding it which is always more fun than fixing it and see if the gauge starts reading correctly.

      If you haven't ridden the bike a few blocks that is probably your problem. Once the unit is disconnected or you go to reserve, you need to ride a few blocks before it will sense the new fuel level.

        As long as you placed the float towards the front of the tank you’re probably good to go.

        Installing them backwards crams the float into a corner where it can’t move vertically.

          Cool, I’ll take it out for a ride. It’s a nice day for a ride here in Ct. today. I’ll let you all know how it works out.

            The later fuel injected bikes also can react that way. If I stop for gas and fill it up. The gauge won't read full until I ride away.

              Thanks guys!! Took it for a short ride around the block, and presto the new gage is working like a charm

                Hi Guys, same scenario as the start thread with "Vicburn", twist the key, needle full swing, then sits at zero, however, I only have 5 litres in my tank, how much do I need before it should register correctly ?, ( I only have the 5L of fuel in the tank following a drain down as I had possible water corruption and now notice with the 5L in the fuel gauge exhibits the symptoms as above), low fuel level of just need to top-up and ride a few miles ?

                  The fuel gauge won't recalibrate until you roll a few hundred yards or so.

                Vicburn that's exactly what happened, after taking the bike out for a few miles its all good now
