  • Dead Electrical System

    While riding yesterday , my Motor turned OFF as if I had turned the key off. Battery checks at 12.77 after overnight disconnected. All fuses check out good. No Power Anywhere . No Ignition , No lights Nothing .

    the only thing I changed electrical was the headlight , put the same LED unit in that I put in my '01. simple plug and play .

      Something groundes/shorted in headlight bucket would be my initial guess. Remove Headlight and start looking for bare wire somewhere

      Do you have any way to put a load on the batter and make sure it still puts out? A digital volt meter is good for reading voltage, but if the batter is bad it could possibly drop with even just a slight load. As always, start with the simple/easy things first.

        No problem , just switched it into my other RS and it fired it right up .

      Hmmmm...so when you say "no power", I presume that means the starter doesn't turn the engine over as well? Just making sure we're talking about the same things.

      I have family that lives down south that will say a car won't "crank". To them, that means it won't start and run. Here that would mean the starter isn't even turning the engine over.

      I personally haven't needed to go through the wiring on my bike. But I presume the main lead from the batter goes to the starter relay and from there branches out to the rest of the system. I'd start with a 12v test light and see where the power is and isn't. I'm following the same thoughts as Lug Nut that is sounds like something could have shorted and taken out a fuse. Not sure where all the fuses are located. So is there a possibility that one's hiding that got overlooked?

        Well , what I mean by no power is this . When I turn my ignition key to "on" nothing lights up , the speedo and gas gauge don't sweep , the horn won't beep and the starter don't happen . " NO POWER " I will try the headlight in my other RS and eliminate a short there. Tomorrow , I'm done with it for today , Thank You .

      You might want to check the starter relay under the left cover all the power comes in at that point there are two fuses under it.

        In searching the electric diagram , the Stater Relay has no effect on light system , only drive system.

      if you checked all the fuses there are two under the relay check it out , at least that's how my 04 is the fuses plug into the bottom of the relay, if it blows there is no power its worth a shot.

        Yes, ditto, check those fuses. Didn't bump the kill switch on the right handle bar did you? Just making sure. I dug into my bike once and it was just that someone had walked by and flipped my kill switch, since I don't use it I never look at it.
        It's not that life is so short, it's just that you're dead for so long.---unknown.

          Only one fuse is used right side and other is a spare. Check with a meter the fuse not only looking at it. Check wiring sounds like something is intermittent. I recently had a no charge symptom and while troubleshooting I did unplug the plugin at the starter relay. It was cruddy in there so cleaned all up with electrical contact cleaner.

            Just jumped the Relay poles and it cranks . So new Relay will be ordered .

              Better get an oem relay....aftermarkets are known to fail. I got me a low mile used I carry with me along with a regulator rectifier.

              Well , this morning I pulled my Relay out of my '01 and put it in the '02 . Worked perfectly . Now can anyone tell me Why my Speedometer reads 21 mph setting still ? But my odometer reads perfect and gas gauge is right on also . just finished 231.8 mile run and it took 4.6 gallons of gas , yep , 50 mpg.

              I have exactly the same problem. Rode my bike to work this past Tuesday, came home for lunch, went out to get on it and go back to work, turned the key, hit the starter, it bumped one time. Hit the starter again, something clicked and then nothing. No electric anywhere. No lights, no dash lights, no needle sweep on the speedometer, no horn, no electrical system at all.. I've done all the same tests as you and everything appears good. Years ago, I swapped out the stock relay and starter solenoid for a Chrysler Police Interceptor solenoid powered through a relay and 4ga wire from battery to starter, with a 1ga ground wire. Fuses are all good going to the solenoid/relay though. I've checked the headlight bucket and no visible problems in there. I tried wiggling things to see if there might be a broken wire or short, but no blips in the electrical system at all. I'm at a loss. Sounds like you got yours figured out with help through this thread, mind if I hijack it and see if anyone has any suggestions/thoughts. pointers?

                OEM Starter Relay made mine work . But , for some reason my Speedo is not returning to the 0 stop pin .

              Fixed the Speedometer . I just pulled the needle off and put it back where it was supposed to be and WALA !!! FIXED. Now I need a Complete Understanding on the Barnett Clutch Conversion PLEASE !

                It is also a good time to replace the oil pump drive gear that is located behind the clutch basket. The 1 on the right is the upgraded gear notice the difference in the beefier drive end.
