I have a 33 tooth front pulley. What size rear pulley do I need to use my stock belt?

  • #2
Uh...the stock one. I am swapping to a 128T belt with stock front pulley (00 Road Star) and using a 65T rear HD pulley to lower my rpm's about 400 in each gear for better highway cruising

If I'm going larger in the front, I need to go smaller in the rear?

        I run a 33 front and a 65 rear, stock tire size, with a 128 tooth belt.
I, myself really like this set up for highway cruzing.

Duke, I'm assuming that is the HD rear pulley? Is that a narrow belt or wider? can you run a narrow belt on the wider front sprocket?

I have a 33 front and stock rear and stock belt on my 2880. I turned down the two white rollers slightly so they didn’t rub the belt. Some folks remove them, but they are there to prevent the belt from jamming up in the event the belt breaks.

I run the stock narrow belt on my wider 33T front.

One thing you'll find out is that the speedo will be dead on with a 33 tooth on a 1700.

Is the 128 tooth belt the stock belt? What tooth count on the stock belt?

stock is 130t 1600's have a 1.5" wide and 1700's have a 1-1/8" wide belt. harley pulley will bolt right one if you drill out the bolt holes to the metric size stud on the road star wheel from what i heard.

Smokescreens is correct. If you use the Harley sprocket, then all you need to do is, open up the 5 stud mounting holes 1/32" larger for a snug fit.

Roadiemort, you are correct on the drill bit size, 31/64". I just checked a sprocket that I had drilled.

So a 67 tooth pulley will work with the stock belt?

Yes it will, if your belt isn't really worn.

Jaybo, yes, I'm using the HD sprocket with the 1.5" belt. HD makes the 65 tooth pulley in both widths. I'll try to look-up what sprocket I used, and let you know.
I know that you can use the wide front pulley with the 1" belt, but I'm not sure on the rear pulley.
Maybe someone will help answer that question.

All Road Stars have a 70 tooth rear sprocket. I think Yamaha went to the 1 1/8" belt in 04 or 05.
All 99 to 03 Road Stars had 33 front sprocket and the 1.5" belt.

Yes, that would work. You'll have a little longer legs than stock, but for the money spent, I feel the 65 tooth sprocket is better bang for the buck.

Do it right, the proven way is stock front pulley, 65T rear HD pulley (can get 1.25 or 1.5 in wide for whatever belt size you currently use....1600 has 1.5 and 1700 has 1 1/8)...drill out bolt holes on pulley just a tad (exact drill bit mentioned above...can don't home with strong drill)...get 128T new belt. Don't over think it or try to cut corners. This system works and lowers rpm's about 400 in each gear. Don't screw around with a 68 rear pulley or trying to reuse stock belt...won't work out right. Either keep it all stock or don't the proven way.

I'm totally happy with my stock rear and 33 front on my 2008. Not as extreme as changing both pulleys but still better than stock.

There is nothing wrong with my belt. I'm not going to buy a new belt.
