  • My evaluation of my 33t drive pulley

    So I changed my drive pulley on the week end from 32t to 33t on my 2005R*
    Well, after a 270 miles ride today, all I can say is: this set-up matches my style of riding. I ride mostly solo (95% of the time). At 70 mph the engine is a lot smoother.

      At 70mph are you still in 4th and it being smoother or in 5th gear?

      Personally, I shift to 5th at about 65, 60 if cruising on the flats, 70 if passing up hill. But I go by the feel mostly, not necessarily the speed. Zin!

      Shame the thread “Longer Legs” is gone.

      Thats where a member went into detail about also going from a 70T back pulley to a 65T to really explore the bounds of long stoke engines and utilizing all that low end torque.

        I'm running a 32 tooth front and a 65 rear sprocket = 2.03, and I'm considering putting on the 33 sprocket. Right now my RPMs are a little over 2000 at 60 mph. At around 50 mph I need to down shift unless I just ease the throttle on. 60 + and I have plenty Power. I'm only 165 # and ride single 97% of to time.
        1st gear is plenty low for me, and enjoy the low cruising RPMs. I don't mind it If I need to shift.

          That’s the whole enchilada about loafing along with taller gearing.

          Just need to think like an automatic transmission.

            I go the very opposite way... and put 31 tooth pulleys on mine, but then, I rarely see 60 mph, and I'm always toodling around our backroads at 35 to 45. I can drop it in 4th, and stay there at those speeds. Doesn't matter where I go... If I can figure a backroad way to get there, and I almost always do, that's how I roll. When you're old, retired, and everyone else is at work during weekdays, the roads are your own!!!

              I live in east TN and avoid the interstate like the plague..most of my riding is less than 70 mph like you.... The only down side to the 31 IMO is running out in first too soon..

              I live in the coast range mountains of Oregon. Put a 31t on because many times 2nd is too low and third was too high. I avoid the I-5 slab like the plague. First runs out quickly, like Flashback said ,but I can deal with that.

            I recently went from 32t to 33t drive pulley on my 2012 R* too and so far i like it though i dont have that many miles under my belt with it .

            Haven't had a chance to test out with Wife on the back yet but solo it's good because it now allows me to comfortably cruise all day long in 4th gear on flat road from 48mph to approx 60mph without having to shift into 5th till 64-65mph.

            Often traffic in my area & out on country roads is cruising @ approx 48-50mph on lower side to 58- 60mph on higher end and with the 33t drive pulley i can now comfortably cruise most of the time in 4th gear with no more shifting back & forth between 4th & 5th like i used to do with the stock 32t pulley.

            But it seem's i can shift into 5th @ 61-62mph riding solo with the 33t drive pulley when there is little to no wind on mostly flat road though it seem's a bit happier going to 5th at 64-65mph w-33t drive pulley.

            Now i hope we get few more nice riding days here in upstate NY so i can run thru a couple tanks fuel to see if the 33t pulley affected mpg in one way or another along with also testing it with the wife on the back & bags loaded too.

            BTW,another positive thing is with the stock 32t drive pulley the speedo wasn't accurate readung approx 3-4mph faster then actual road speed,but now with the 33t drive pulley the speedo is reading proper road speed.

              I had a 31t drive pulley on the 06 R* i used to have a loved it in town and on back country roads too,bike cruised real comfy at 58-62mph in 5th gear too.

              Only i have 31t pulley is once in a while i am on open road where i need to do at least 68-70mph so i didnt get run over and the 31t pulley gets old quick because cruise rpm is too high for my liking (@ 68-70mph+) with a 31t pulley vs the 33t pulley.

              So far the 33t drive pulley seems to do well in town & or when cruising on back country roads in 4th and then 5th can be used as an OD gear of sorts when i hit the open road once in a while.
