  • AIS Removal, New Baffles and PCV Filter

    Hi All,

Been on the forum for a little over a month (same time for the “new to me” bike). The help from all the members has been Great! I have the Cobra long shots with the stock baffles and it was quite loud as well as massive backfiring on deceleration. Quite annoying as you might imagine. I ordered the Baron AIS removal kit, Cobra “quite core” baffles and a external filter for the PVC from Denis Kirk. Cudos to DK for having everything in stock, at a good price and fairly quick free shipping (must be approx. $90 total for the shipping). I, in my unbridled enthusiasm, assumed the baffles would be a quick swap out... HA! LOL After stripping the bolts that attached the baffles, taking the entire exhaust system off, drilling out the offending screws and renting a slide hammer from the local auto parts store, baffles were out! New baffles went in smoothly. Followed the Barons instructions (sparce at best, no pictures either) and a few YouTube videos (no real good ones either) the AIS system was off and plugged. I made a bracket to mount the PCV filter where the AIS pump/filter was from a piece of 1/8” x 1” x1” aluminum angle from the local big box store, i prefer the orange store over the blue store for various reasons... So, after a test ride, the exhaust is quieter (not massively but is noticeable) and hardly any backfiring!!! That was worth the whole ordeal in and of itself. I’m assuming the AIS removal was the reason for the no backfiring but since i did the baffles at the same time it is unsure which change had the desired effect. Time will tell if the air filter will not become saturated with engine oil but if nothing else the external filter looks cool, see attached pics (not the best, sorry).

    Thanks again for everyone’s help

The crankcase vent looks good there.
Getting rid of the AIS, is what cured the backfiring.

Revist the torque on the exhaust flange nuts on the cold motor, after a couple of hot and cold cycles. They tend to loosen a bit until they get settled.

Didn’t realize the exhaust nuts would require a retorque, thanks for the tip!

Nice job, vent mount looks factory. Don't know if you're carb is still stock, but if you still have some backfiring on decal after all is done, assuming no exhaust leaks, you may need to richen up by dialing out the PMS a little.

Doc, the engine is a Fuelie. The BF is all but gone, may get a stray BF every once in a while but way, way better. Thanks

Fuelies, minus the AIS, and sporting loud pipes, burble while decelerating, more than anything.

I have done all of these things to mine. The burble sound is correct, I like it. Every once in a while I still get a backfire through the intake at slow speeds in town.

You need to start a new thread on this topic and not hojack this thread and the other one you did. Answers.....Seafoam, Techron Injector/carb cleaner, Chemtron B-12, Marvel Mystery Oil.

D-Fresh, I hear ya on that annoying BF. One of the 1st things I done after obtainin’ my Roadie back in April. Done research & completed the AIS delete as well by Barrons. As I mentioned in my thread bout the discrepancy I had at highway speeds (fixed now thanks to y’all on this forum by removin’ that daggone PC5), I too also have the Cobra Speedster Longshots. But I wanted more rumble & in the past on my last cruisers I made ‘lollipops’ to sit in my pipes. Made these in the metal shops at the units I was stationed last few years. But this time was lazy n’ just ordered BCT Big City Thunder Monster baffles n’ man, sounds so much better than the stock Cobra baffles.

I'd never heard of BCT until i read your post. Looks like they make baffles for many different mfg's too. I'm curious to the sound/performance difference from the Cobra quiet cores to the monster baffles? You have any pics of what the monster baffles look like?

            • #10
Here’s a pic brother from online. Just google search & visit the site. I believe this is the size I got. Fits the Cobras perfectly. Also, you get a t-shirt as well when ordering. It’s actually easy to make urself if ur good with metal working & welding, but I was lazy this time. Roughly with shipping came to a tad over $100.

Looks (and probably sounds/performs) completely different! I think they were approx. $80? See attached. Would like to compare some day...

Yeah, they’re only like ~ 6in in length. The unique concept, tho, behind them is the incorporation of a stud with a welded washer on the end that sits on the inside baffle. What this washer is designed to do is provide needed back pressure throughout the power band while creating more rumble added to the sound. They also make similar ‘quiet’ core baffles such as what you described. Believe me, my Hawwwley buds notice a big difference in rumble, while maintaining that nice loud tone.
