HD CONTROLS CONVERSION ON A 2000 ROAD STAR
    By Grinder

I assume no liability if you decide to take on this highly difficult modification on your motorcycle. This is just a guideline from my experience. All wires should be tested with a digital multi-meter and tested before final connections are made. I am not sure that wiring colors are the same from year to year, such as the 99-03 model versus the 04 and up model. My Road Star is a 2000 basic model. I highly recommend soldering the wires and using heat shrink wrap, cause this gives a much better connection. I also added quick disconnect water proof plugs for emergency purposes. You can use your stock Yamaha plugs to make this connection, but then you will have solder joints in two places versus one. I sold my stock switches and wiring harness, so I didn’t have the pleasure.

Your cables and brake lines need to be ordered as “bastard cables”… this means you have to have them special ordered with the HD tops and Road Star bottoms… I have found that Phat Performance works with you very well on ordering these from Barnett… I am sure that Clifford would also be able to order them way as well… Be sure to know what kind of HD clutch end, throttle cable end and the diameter of the brake line banjo bolt is before ordering, so that you don’t get the wrong ones and have to wait an additional 3 to 4 weeks for the right stuff. That can be very frustrating.

The wiring is very simple. Once you know what wire is what, everything will go as smooth as glass. You will also need to go to Badlands Products and get their ATS-03 turn signal module or equivalent from another manufacturer. I find the ATS-03 is very nice cause it has the turn signal cancellation feature after 9 seconds. And it also has a built in load equalizer if you decide to run L.E.D.’s. Here is the run down to what I have done.

The starter wire needs to be ran through a relay. The Yamaha controls run on a negative output where the HD controls run on a positive output. This is how you need to wire the relay. Yamaha blue with white stripe goes to pole #87, HD black with red stripe goes to pole #85, ground poles #86 & #30 and leave pole #87a open.

The safety switch which it attached to the clutch lever on the Yamaha controls must now be dealt with. To make everything work properly you need to ground these three wires together and to a good known ground. Yellow with red stripe, blue with yellow stripe and black with yellow stripe. Once that is accomplished, your bike will start without having to pull in the clutch. This will also bypass the kickstand safety switch, so make this at your own risk and judgment.

    Road Star = Harley-Davidson
    RH Side:
Kill Switch = Red w/black stripe & white tracer = HD Gray
Starter = Blue w/white stripe relay pole #87 = HD Black w/red stripe relay pole #85
Brake Light = Yellow = HD Red w/yellow stripe
Right Turn Signal = See Badlands Wiring = HD White w/brown stripe
Power = Red w/white stripe = HD White w/black stripe (start, kill)
Power = Brown = HD Orange w/white stripe (turn, brake)

    LH Side:
Power = Pink = HD Orange w/white stripe
Left Signal = See Badlands wiring = HD White w/violet stripe
Horn = Black w/white tracer = HD Yellow w/black stripe
    Head Light =
Green w/black dot = HD Yellow
Red w/yellow stripe = HD Blue
Yellow w/black dot = HD White

    Ground = Black

Cap off and do not use = Brown w/white stripe & Black w/white stripe

    Badlands Turn Signal Module ATS-03:
    Yamaha ATS-03
    Brown w/white tracer Gray
    Green w/white tracer Yellow
    Red w/white stripe Red
    Ground Black

    HD ATS-03
    White w/brown stripe Brown
    White w/violet stripe Violet

Some of you may ask, what is a tracer on a wire? A tracer is either a dot or dash or a series of either. It is not a solid line.
