  • My endless search for hard saddlebags...

Been a minute since I had any questions about my bike, but now, I'm starting to wonder about hard saddle bags.

Before anyone says "search the forum" I did, and while I did find some lovely R* pics with some nice bags on them, I need a little more specificity...

So, as it might seem, I'm in the market for some hard bags for my '02 Silverado. I'm not so much of a "buy some and modify them" type guy more of a "which bags can I buy that will just bolt right onto" the OEM leather bag mounting brackets? I'm currently rolling with OEM leather bags, and as much as I like them, and they do what I want, I'm about to start a new job, where I won't be able to see my bike parked, so I'd like to investigate some locking bags.

I only have 3 criteria for them really.
    • 1) They have to fit on the OEM saddlebag mounts. (I don't mind drilling a correctly placed hole, but that's all the "modification" I want to do to it.
    • 2) Gloss black and locking
    • 3) Won't interfere with my Vance and Hines long shots.
I've looked all over the web and even asked a few folks about what they think I should do, but no one seems to have a real good answer for me, so now, I'm turning to the pros.

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions, and thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it. Please include a link if you can, that way I can click, look, and purchase if that's what time it is.

Your cheapest route would be Harley ABS bags and Softail HD mounting brackets readily available online. If you need someone to search that out for you your in the wrong place. Use our search function at the top and type in the key words should help you find older posts that you should read first.

These look just like the stock Yamaha bags but are not quite as strong. They are adequate.

These are Yamaha knockoffs that would bolt to the stock brackets.https://www.ebay.com/itm/23145042478...Bk9SR6DygLHNYQ

Yes they are. I got my previous post mixed up with Mutazu bags which are a little flimsy.

I bought some OEM saddlebags in primer grey off of eBay. They do not come with the locks. I have them at my buddy's paint shop and I am looking forward to getting them mounted.

So the saddlebags I had originally I hated. I picked up some OEM hard bags from our sponsor Rockriver. They had some Old New Stock that they managed to pick up. I did have to buy the bag brackets and the hardware because they were just the bags. Picked up the brackets off eBay ordered the hardware from partzillla if I remember correctly….might contact our sponsor and see if they have any bags left. If I hadn’t bought the OEM’s I would have went with the Tsyuaka Jumbo Bags like posted above.

I ordered Genos lowering brackets for the bags. I also run V&H Longshots and everything works great and looks good.

picks are of the before bags and the after bags…..even the dog was unimpressed with the before bags and he is even happy with the new ones…lol

              hope this helps you….

                How much for the dog?

Your old bags look pretty solid and functional, but the stockers definitely fit the bike better. I'm debating whether to take my bike down to a solo bike, not really a bobber, so would probably unload my hard bags should I go that route. Won't know til spring.

Dog is not for sale……he is the sweetest thing…when I’m around…..if I’m not….I suggest NOT coming up my driveway or getting out of your car……and God help you if the kids are there…. He might tear the door off your vehicle…..He likes new chew toys..

Where are located? I know you want hard bags but I have these NOS Tour Classic bags with brackets for $500. Great bags, semi hard, and look good.

I'm in MD and I really don't want to ship. If you're within a few hours I would consider a road trip.

****Just Saw the locking requirement. Disregard****

I have soft bags on my bike currently but I have a locking box that is attached to the frame of the bike with a steel cable. I put my self defence device in the box when I have to leave it in the parking lot.

These are the bags I got. Made for HD’s but These bolt directly into our stock saddlebag mounting points. You have to drill a hole for the bottom bracket hole mount below the pegs and also get some metal spacers for the top mounting holes to level the bag out but other than that it’s a fairly easy bolt up. Clears my exhaust and they are sturdy. I have had no issues with them. Any other questions feel free to reach out. I also linked a YT video from a guy who put these on which is where I got the info about these.

Lots of options are available for locking hard bags for the Roadstar that don't need modifications.
The year of Roadstar makes no difference, the mounting points were never changed from 1999 through 2014.

If you only want to bolt on & go, the fender and mounting hole positions are exactly the same as the HD Softtail.
If you want locking & something different than everyone running HD bags, look for some RoyalIte bags.
Originals or Reproductions of the 1950s 'Bubble Bags', both are basically identical with the newer ones being slightly stronger, plus they're not 6 decades old.

I love mine - big, really solid, vintage looking & only 2 bolts to slap them on using the Softtail version.
I've had these on for about 5 years and they're holding up beautifully.
The only problem is finding them, I got mine from a place that does trike conversions.
They will usually sell used bags cheap because trikes usually don't use saddlebags.
