  • Purchasing RaceTech springs, would love help...

I have my finger on the button but don't want to buy the wrong springs.. I have a 2002 Yamaha XV1600AS Road Star Midnight, I already bought and received my BMW RAD off of ebay, just got done ordering the GL1800 rear shock off of a 2003 GoldWing on ebay. I know I still need a couple of things for the RoadWing but I am looking to get the RaceTech springs with emulators for the front forks and do it all at once. I have read the threads here and am confident this is the best setup hands down, but didn't read anything about spring rate and weight of rider. I'm 320lbs, so I want to get the right springs and the website recommended,
Recommended Front Spring Rate: 1.15 kg/mm (Use closest available)
Does it change anything by getting the emulators too or do I stick with the recommended rate from the site?

The site also shows a 1.1 kg/mm $159.99 or a 1.2 kg/mm $134.99 frame rate, would the 1.1 or the 1.2 be better? I do go down in weight but 320 has historically been my max weight.

Going to order new steering head bearings and brake pads while I'm doing the rest also. Made a list, finishing it off. I'm sure I'll make a new list when this one is done, lol.

    Thanks

I would err on the softer side of the springs. You know what ever you get, it's gonna be stiffer than what you have now. Too stiff is bad on so many levels.

I went stiffer. But im only 160 and ride it like a sports bike. They seem to have softened a bit since new or maybe Im just getting used to them. Got almost 10,000miles on them. But I did springs only.

I would go stiffer as well. I was at 300 when I did the front and rear suspension and I too went with Race Tech springs. I'm down to 245 now and they are still great. They will wear in and soften a little. My only regret was not doing the cartridge emulators when I did it. It's on my list for this next winter though to make it even more responsive. If you can afford them, do them while you have it apart, you will not regret it.

Save your money and get the Progressive springs. I've run both Race Tech springs with their Gold Emulators, as well as the Progressive springs alone, and the Progressives are much better. Someone may try to convince you otherwise, but I'd be willing to bet they haven't tried both on a R*. Are the RTs better than stock? Sure. But are they ideal? Far from it... I'm in the midst of dealing with RaceTech, waiting on my *third* pair of springs, at this point I'm just trying to get their springs and emulators to perform as well as the Progressive springs alone did on my old R*, but it's beginning to look like I may end up having to buy a set Progressive springs when all is said done. [I certainly hope not.]

You can get the Progressive springs for $85 shipped:

While you're at it, get a couple quarts of 10wt fork oil. You'll be more than satisfied.

i had stock, progressive, lowered progressive and the race tech. i would never go back to the progressive myself. if you have a fairing on the front go stiffer if your in the middle between spring rates. if not i would go for the softer spring if your in the middle. you can always add a small amount of oil in the tubes to make the front end a little stiffer at that point.

Jason, what was it about the Progressive springs you didn't like and what setup did you have with the Rach Tech gear? Was it with your air ride system and full HD batwing?

your a big boy and with all the crap we travel with you going to need a 1000lb spring under you.

Just keep a eye on the tabs around where the shock mounts to.

              It is a week spot.

I'm looking into doing Racetech spring and emulators myself. My butt hurts a little from the price racetech quoted me for the complete job. That's springs, emulators, bushings, oil and all for $716. Then I have to add the shipping, so it's likely a $800 job. I've done the racetech set-up before but paid half that fee since you can find the oil, bushings, seals and stuff for cheaper then racetech is charging, plus no labor fee. I just dont have the space or time to do it myself again so likely I'm going to take the hit for the additional $400.

Yet nobody complains when they spend $1000 for Pretty Dual Exhaust that do nothing to make the bike better just looks cool.Lol.
