  • Frame squaring numbers

    Hi everyone
Will when you start rebuilding things and your new parts don't fit you better check to see if the frame is square. An being a aircraft mechanic for 40 some years this gets drummed into you every day when you start a rebuild. so when I got a good part from Mr. Rob. Thanks again Rob that part the upper engine mount (stay as Yamaha calls it ) does not line up with the top of the engine and it shows that the engine has moved forward and down. Now if I bolt it to the frame it is forward of the engine holes, if I bolt it to the engine it fits but the frame bolt holes are aft and high. If the numbers show that the frame is good and I think it is then I will bend the mount to fit. What I can find is the numbers to check to see if something is bent on the frame or the mount needs to be mode to fit. Does anyone have numbers that show where things are suppose to be. in relation to one another?

Why not loosen All of your engine mounts and see if you can get the upper mount to line up with the engine? Then re torque all of the bolts.

I'm thinking your engine has settled without it's upper mount.

There are 2 different top engine mounts, early 1600 mounts and later 1700 mounts, the holes in them are not the same.

I seem to remember that there were two different upper engine mounts. Did you get the correct one for your year bike?

I don't know I got them from RobFL I check there is no part number on them that I saw. I will loosen the other bolts and check their alignment after I get it out of the back of the truck and on to a bench I hope I get it out of the truck tonight. if there are differences it would only be the down bracket and if thats the case that easy to fix.
thanks I let you all know what happens.

Yes, you can slot the holes a little to make it fit, just wasn't sure if you were aware.

As far as alignment, you CAN line drop the steering neck and the inner side of the swing arm mounts to establish a centerline and then line drop other points off the frame to check for symmetry, but there is no guarantee that all mirrored points are intended to be completely symmetrical. There is a service company franchised in North America that does frame alignment (principally race machines) but the name escapes me right now. They do a lot of club racer’s bikes after they have done the yard sale dance through the runoff and beyond.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

thanks everyone I chk it all out and get back to you on what I found, the upper mount I got it the correct one so I figure the engine did move from the accident I just have to find out where it moved form. An the fun continues
I finely got it out of the back of my truck last night with the help of my kabota and some friends that stop by no I can move it to a place that does not require me to climb in an out of a high truck bed to work on it.

well i got the beast out of the back of the truck ( so now I can use it again ) an made a table to get it off the ground so I can save my knees. An both the new table and it await a shed to i hope he built soon. also have color on the new left bag which was a snap to fix and started to paint the tank.
Also working on finding out where the cause of the motor is setting which is effecting the upper mount not fitting

Honestly, I would start with another frame myself.

well what fun would that be I think the frame is not that bad and once I get a chance to check it out and make some more checks I decide what to do. Like the old story goes, It is not the destination that is important but the journey that one must take in order to enjoy the life one has chosen.

I will assume you know what you are doing but will say not all structural damage is visible to the naked eye.
