Looking to replace the seat on my 04. I almost bought a Saddlemen but am looking for the most comfortable long range seat I can get, another group recommended ED or Ultimate. What is the general consensus?

  • #2
I run the ED Big Tour with backrest and passenger pillion. I love this seat and many on here have them. The ultimate is a good seat too. After sitting on both I chose the the ED and my ass has been happy ever since. I wasn’t sure about adding the backrest at 1st but damn I’m glad I did. I think it actually makes it more comfortable than just the regular seat. Worth every penny in my book and wouldn’t hesitate buying one again. ED was really easy to work with and I got it before the quoted delivery date.

You say you sat on both, was one softer/harder? Do you know if my backrest will work with the seat? From pics, if one wants a backrest, the pillion is mandatory.

From my decade of experience here, the two favorite seats are the ED touring and the ultimate. I agree, that a backrest will double your pleasure. I did not like the ED standard as it was too narrow in the front but the touring model is a very different seat and extremely well padded. Ultimate makes only one model which is good. Any others have mixed reviews.

Thanks for the photos, your seat profile looks different from what the web site shows. Is the ED profile deeper than the factory?

Mustang has a seat that the backrest is a part of the rider seat and doesn't require the pillion (that's what I have). But it's also a stiffer seat from what I've heard. I have an Ultimate but haven't had it on the bike yet to judge for myself.

The Big Tourer is more comfortable for me. I’m in the 255 to 270 range weight wise and it just seemed more comfortable for me plus I like the extra reach it provides even though I’m in the 5’10” range…..yes the backrest is integrated into passenger pillion but it makes a world of difference. I also had a grasshopper backrest that I tried with my stock seat before going to the ED. Because I paired it with the stock uncomfortable rock of a seat I didn’t notice a difference with or without it……I think I still have it on my shelf in the shop.

I have an ultimate seat with a $100 grasshopper backrest and I love both. The backrest is not dependent upon having a passenger seat as it just bolts to the fender underneath the passenger seat bracket. I removed the passenger seat bracket and just bolted the backrest directly to the fender. It is not adjustable but it works great for me.

I have not tried the Ed seat. I have the Ultimate seat and I like it, I am 150 lbs soaking wet and don't use the backrest. YMMV

The ED standard has a deeper profile than the ED touring which is what lug nut is showing. It is for bigger riders with longer legs as it has more padding and elevates you a little more.

I think you are actually talking about the Big Touring seat here. I am a shorter rider (29" inseam) and found the Big Touring a bit tall and wide. I am currently on my second E.D. Standard seat on my R* (couldn't find a local place that was willing to re-cover the old one). I also have a 2015 XVS1300 Tourer that came with the Ultimate seat when I bought the bike, so I get to compare the two brands regularly. I have made several multi-day trips on the R* with little comfort issues, but have not made all that many high-mileage trips on the 1300, yet, so I really can't give much input.on long range comfort.for the Ultimate.. Around town, highway and one-or two tanksful, both seats are about the same. The one drawback is that you have to make your decision on whether to get the seat ack at the time of purchase , for the Ultimate. Since my E.D. is set up for solo, and the Ultimate is set up for use with the stock passenger pillion, I've got both examples. Choose wisely, my friend!!

Had to look at your other post for a pic of your bike. Not sure how your backrest is mounted if it would work or not.

Honestly unless you are getting rid of your passenger pillion I’d go with the whole bundle. Your passenger will thank you too….My wife thinks it’s the best upgrade I’ve done on my bike……and I have a 110 Big Bore I had put in it last year…..but the seat now that’s something to talk about in her eyes….

Had a great talk with Mike at ED and based upon my size, weight, etc. I bought the the big tour, full meal deal, pillion, backrest and rear pad. Thanks to everyone here who generously gave great advice!

I am going into the seat market as well. Thinking of giving the Saddleman Renegade with Double Diamond stitch a go.

Just got a good feeling about buying this for my stumpy little legs. Lower and a little forward they claim. Will let ya know how the gel seat goes.

                    Wobbly.

The E.D. Standard moves you forward a little, and lowers your butt a bit. My inseam is 29". if that helps.
