  • Gear lever without heal option.

Dislike how the heal part of leaver stops me being able to move foot around on longer rides. Is there a lever we can buy without heal. Do not want to cut it as will rust.

Anyone got a part number or other option.

    Thanks

There used to be a bus load of them available, but the aftermarket support for these scooters has slowly but surely dwindled away.
If you have access to a powder-coating service, cut the back side of you original shifter off and get it powder coated. Black, silver, Chevrolet Orange...let you imagination run wild !
    And it will never rust.

My 08 had a separate toe lever and a separate heel lever. I just removed the heel lever and traded it for a 33 tooth front pulley. I assume the later model tow lovers will fit the early models. But don't worry about it resting, just do what Mort said or let it be. It's not like it's going to fall off because of a little rust on the cut side.

You need more of the assembly than the toe lever. I'll post below.

My fuelie also has the two piece shift lever. I didn't think that I would like the heel part of the Road Star shifter because it is so different from other bikes that I have owned with a heel shifter but after a little adjustment, it's the easiest shifter to use. I find that it's quite smooth and quick.

I found it awkward at first but then grew on me. Now I wouldn't have a cruiser without one.

            Exactly. Love my heel shifter.

Looking at the parts catalog it appears the 2 piece shift lever came into play on the 2006 models and above. If you look the splined shaft is integral to the 2005 and older shifter, where the 2006+ it's a separate part.

If you have your mind set on cutting off your heel shifter I might suggest you cut off just the peg. Later on if you change your mind you could drill and tap the peg, drill and countersink the shift lever, and reattach it with a flat head screw.

Nope! Just a place to get your pants or laces hung up.

You can find another shifter on EBay if you don't like the cut off heel. I've seen several and they're going for around $30., some bent for cheaper and can be straightened up. Just a thought.

I just dont like how it restricts your foot. Like to move my feet round a bit on longer rides is all.

2006+ had this style. I personally like it better than the earlier style.

I was skeptical when I first saw it, but it actually is a great heel shifter. I know on other bikes I would back my heel up to the heel shifter peg, but this one is just there whenever you drop your heel to shift.

Can someone explain the advantage of schifting with your heel? This is my first bike ever with this “feature” since I’ve been riding sportsbikes before. To me it just seems (very) unneccesary….

I'm not sure there's an "advantage" outside of not scuffing the top of your boot. But for me personally it just quickly became a habit and that's how I shift now. So if I were to buy another bike with floorboards I guess I'd expect it to have a heel/toe shifter and if not I'd probably look to add one. I think a bike with pegs you don't move your feet around as much and you're always under the shifter. On my bike my feet are often back or the heel is on the board and the toe is on the highway bar peg. So any shift requires foot movement.

It seems to me that the heel shifter is quick and easy once you get used to using it. I also ride a XVS650 Custom that has pegs and toe shifter and it works alright. I adjusted the toe shifter on the Road Star so I could shift with my toe if I wanted to and the heel shifter is low. I have broken my left leg in several places over the years and even when I was having trouble picking my toe up, I could pick my heel up and easily shift.

Nothing wrong with configuring your bike to your own personal preferences.

im with the get rid of the phukking thang group. if u ride occasionally its great, if u ride daily all year , sooner or later your shoelace WILL HANG UP ON IT, AND YOU AND THE BIKE WILL GO TO THE GROUND, unless u cut the dang thing off. leave a small nub. also allows full use of floorboards, by FEET, imagine that? BTW, ALL my RSs have the OEM custom front only shifter, hard to find part, they usually corrode a little, but the toe knob is like 1 1/8 diameter.
