Gotta drill the neck to mount engine guard. crash bar.

  • Gotta drill the neck to mount engine guard. crash bar.

    I am making brackets to mount an HD engine guard. Now I am at the point of drilling through the gusset below the neck, and I am a little leery.

    Is there anything specific to worry about or watch for?

    I assume the gusset itself is hollow.

    I am not quite sure how I am going to deal with the angles not matching the bar mounting hole.

    I am not exactly sure how to make sure the bar is level in order to mark on the brackets where to drill when it's only hanging by the top bolt.

    Has anyone done this that can offer any pointers?

    I just drilled mine and no issues. Nothing special. I drilled mine probably around 8 years ago.

      Be carefully, the engine Water coolant lines might run through that hollow frame (cause I cant seem to find them anywhere else)

        I mounted a Lindby bar on my 09, just drilled a pilot hole (shorter bits) and went bigger until I had the proper size.

          Mount the bottoms before you drill the top, easy peasy. Do you know how to pick the engineer out of the crowd? They tell you.

            I mounted mine to the floorboard extenders first, then mounted the center bolt right under the neck. Click image for larger version

              If you have intention of putting HD lowers on your bike you might want to put these extensions on now as you will need the clearance. Easy to make from flat stock.

                I am making brackets from flat stock. I currently have them drilled to go between the floorboards and the frame. I don't have the front hole drilled yet. It seemed like it would be easier to mount the top centered, and just drill where the lower brackets fall.

                  Sure, that would also help if the bars are slightly tweaked, easier to pull the bottoms into alignment.

                  You could use small clamps or vice grips to hold the bottom until you get them placed where you want on your brackets. Then drill the bottom and deal with the top. If your working off a motorcycle jack drop the front wheel and fender for room on the top.

                I used a leveling washer mounting my lindybar

                  Well, neck hole is drilled. I may need to open it up a little. Unfortunately I don't have a drill that easily fits between the forks and the neck. I'll probably get in there with the Dremel to get a little clearance.

                  Roadi, I looked at those, but they don't hold a drill bit, just a 1/4 hex bit.
                  I did see a similar device with a drill chuck. I may go that route
