  • Pin hole in gas tank

Alright so my luck being what it is, I just got done with the best paint job I've ever managed to pull off hooked everything up and wouldn't you know it, there a tiny little hole I'd say almost as big as a pin, I know there's loads of ways to fill pin holes BUT if at all possible, I'd really like to avoid heat and salvage this paint job as much as possible as it's not to far from one of my hot rod flames, I'm not worried about blending the black that I can manage but I doubt I'll be able to fix the design without starting over. So the question is, is there a permanent fix that I can sand and blend to fill this hole or am I stuck with stripping the entire thing back down and brazing it shut

I had a hole much larger than yours and I was able to solder it closed permanently without heating the gas tank. I used a 4 inch piece of 1/2" diameter copper rod and drilled and tapped one end so I could attach it to a 12" length of 1" steel shaft. I ground the end of the copper to a shape like a wedge. Rinse the tank thoroughly. Clean and scuff the area around your hole. Apply some flux to the area making sure to get some inside the hole. Use a torch (away from the tank) to heat the copper to a glow and tin the wedge end. Now reheat the copper and apply heat and solder to the hole simultaneously. Use the copper end like a spreader to ensure coverage. The heat is concentrated and won't affect your paint job. There is no open flame so it won't explode your tank. I drilled some holes in a scrap piece of steel sheet and practiced this method prior to attempting the repair. I could see the other side of the sheet metal and the solder flowed through the hole and adhered to the inside.

Please be careful using an arc on a used tank. Fill it with as much water as you can. Also, need to see pictures of the paint job.

Old school soldering irons work also but that is a great DIY iron for sure, The tig welder could be hit or miss depending how thin the metal is on the backside of that pinhole, believe me when I tell you that I've chased a few pinholes lol.

It's not to close so if I play it right I should be able to keep it contained to the black

Beautiful flame job!! That pinhole is a real heartbreaker. I’m sure you will get it.

Chances are if there is a pinhole, there may be other thin or weak parts of the tank. Could end up a futile effort. Best of luck.

Yeah I live in Florida land of humidity. Every year run it down to reserve drain the fuel put in the Sun during the dry season with a coffee filter over over the cap. Gas tanks are just too damn expensive.

For a pinhole as small as yours even a electric soldering gun seems to work.

Huh I might give that a shot today since my arc welder won't be here till tomorrow, I'm just curious with how it'll sand so I can hide it

Take an awl and push it gently into the pin hole to create a small depression you can then fill and still sand level.

That seems contrary to what most folks say. The best way to keep rust out is to keep the tank as full as possible with fuel and with seafoam, techron plus , Stabl or some other ethanol stabilizer treatment in the fuel.

Alright update, I tried the soldering gun method and it stuck pretty dam well, enough for me to file and sand it down and with enough some Bondo I should be able to hide the lines pretty well
