  • Considering the Roadwing...

I need some input here, considering swapping out the stock rear shock and installing the Roadwing, I installed the Barrons 900 lb spring on the stock shock several years ago and if I swap to the Roadwing, would probably try to find an RAP instead of the electric pump.
My question is, can I expect to gain much by installing the Roadwing over the setup that I already have ? I'm wondering if the stock shock has lost it's gas charge because the dampening seems softer than it used to be, in which case the shock should be replaced anyway. But installing a high mileage Goldwing shock could eventually lead to the same problem, so I've been looking at a replacement shock that comes with the heavier spring and also has adjustable dampening. It's also a direct fit so that's a plus but it's also quite a bit more money.....thoughts ?

Its better ride not as harsh and worth the $ going from heavier spring to road wing. Heavier spring is nice but no better rebound and ride quality...its a worthwhile mod

I've had the stock shock with the stock spring, the stock shock with the 1000# eibech spring and now the Road wing. Road wing is by far the best option.
      My 1/2 pennies worth.

Stop considering and get one. Should of been my first mod over any other mod that I had previously done or have made. 2nd was an ED seat. You wont regret it and go with manual rap nothing to wire up and install/bleed.

Made decision to go for the roadwing. Hoping I can get one with the manual RAP and have it shipped up here to me in Ontario, Canada.
Shot a message to Smokescreen to see if possible. On a wait list from a Bill Kingsley Jr. fellow on Facebook and was offered one within Canada but without the RAP.
We shall see where this goes.

You can purchase a rap and install it yourself, ebay, Kijiji. VERY simple procedure. I wont speak for Jason as to whether he can ship across the border, but with a national truck driver shortage you could be waiting a while.

Well after finding out the cost of one of these suckers and the little amount I paid for my 2003. Its not cost effective.
Going to swap out the spring only. Won't be as good as the roadwing set-up. But it will be far better than the 18 year spring that's on there now.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I'm looking at replacing my rear shock also for my 03 but undecided what route to go with EH? lol.

If you don't replace the shock, we'll just have to give you a new nickname....Pogo!

Thanks for the input everyone, from what I've been seeing on ebay the price of the Goldwing shock has went up. There's a motorcycle salvage about an hour and a half from where I live so I'll probably ride over and see if they have anything

For lighter weight riders, I've always wondered how a goldwing shock would perform with a stock spring.

I am usually around 150 lbs on a fat day. I thought the Road Star rides good, I can't see spending money trying to improve an already good ride without some kind of feedback.

I have the Roadwing on my bike. I'm approx. 165lbs. It is definitely nice adjusting the firmness on the fly when I ride two up. I installed a handlebar mount momentary push buttons so I can fine tune it when riding. It is quite nice. I do have another Goldwing shock. Already installed the brass bushings, just need the other side drilled out and cut down. It won't come with the RAP cause I am keeping that. No sure if I want the RAP of keep my setup I got now.

I I have heard that you can rebuild that shock absorber you may want to look on YouTube to see how it’s done

in the rear, I have a progressive 465-1139 with 900lbs spring.. it's great, (but if you are over 160lbs, and ride with a passenger at times, consider going the next heavier spring) I have pre-load adjusted pretty tight but it should be good for me and a 150lb passenger, and not harsh on me alone at 140lbs..can't adjust on the fly, but Highly recommended for its simplicity.

While pre-loading your 465, did you notice losing some clearance? I am about to get a 465-1139. I'm about 210lbs and I ride mainly solo. The Roadwing spring is rated about 852lbs? or something like that so 900 lbs should be plenty enough.

It was already preloaded for a heavier load when I got the bike (to its full limit), and the shock assembly was modified for a 3" drop in the rear (bad idea it was) and I was able to determine how to reverse the foolishness, and now have a 1/2" height drop from OEM, but it was then I also lighten the preload slightly, but it looked to me that the rear end is normal, showing a sizeable amount of travel as it's now set. For ride, it's alittle bit on the tight side but should be perfect with a 140lbs (passenger) on there with me. I'm going to guess you will settle on max preload for your setting with the 900# spring.. It seems to match my upgraded fork springs pretty well.
