  • Roadwing shocker

    Hi.
I am going to change my rear shocker to a roadwing one.
Is it better to get the air pumped one or the manual adjustable one, ride mostly one up at about 20 stone and partner sometimes at about 11 stone.
    Thanks for any info.
    Cheers Steve

I have a Roadwing with the electric pump but I just got it and I haven't installed it yet. I think many use the manual RAP.

I wondered what the conversion was to lbs...

Not sure what the 20 stone and 11 stone refer to? As far as the manual adjustment or the pump it will be your choice on how you want to make the adjustment. Some have used the electric pump but you may have to work a bit to find a suitable place to mount it and the wiring. The manual adjuster seems a bit more popular since it's smaller and mounting points are more abundant.

Thanks DEEPHATE, I figured it was something along those lines. I should Google the conversion rate and give my weight in stones the next time someone asks!

From now on, I'm telling everyone I weigh 18 stone.

Yeah I like this new method!

I have a manual RAP and see no need for electric. I ride solo and rarely have to adjust it. If I do, I just pull to the side of the road and adjust it.

Rap is good.... My newest one I'm getting is going to be "shimmed" for full max load so I don't have to use an adjuster... Just always set full firm. I have found that full firm is best and don't notice a substantially more comfy ride when full soft.

I have had both electric and now RAP. I like the Rap. As said you will probably find the sweet spot for adjustment and pretty much never mess with it again. I have mine adjusted almost full and it rides great either 1 or 2 up.

I'm leaning that way myself possibly. I'm a bit overwhelmed with the electric pump and don't know that I will need to adjust it much.

When adjusted full did you lower the air pressure on the tire. I run 40 in the rear and if I go past 25% of the rap its a ruff ride?

I have one with the electric pump, ran a toggle switch under the left side cover and installed the pump under the right side cover, I had to bend the plate under the right side cover, I had to bend a plate back in there and then zipped tied everything under the cover up. I remove the left cover to adjust mine but I have only adjusted it twice since installing it over 3 yrs ago.

So you don't have the switch available on the fly? I wondered about drilling the cover to mount the switch to be accessible, I don't want to drill the cover though.

Another vote for the RAP here. I have mine mounted just under the right side passenger floorboard, so I can reach down and make adjustments while I'm riding or at a stop light.

I went with the RAP also. Electrical is just another possible issue down the road and if I remember correctly the pumps gears are a weak point and strip. I also mounted mine where Doc has his. I have found I don’t adjust it that much, mine set a little less than full then when the wife hopes on I adjust it to full.

95% of people that buy from me go rap. its more expensive but easier to install and more reliable. without the goldwing computer we dont have a travel limiter and the plastic gear in the pump will get stripped out if you are not carefull. the shock wont be harmed at all but you would lose any added preload untill the pump is repaired or replaced with another or a rap.

Both ways is fluid displacement. There is no air involved.
