  • Oil Pressure Gauge

I finally added a oil pressure gauge that I'm happy with.
I've tried a gauge being hooked up to the oil feed going to the heads, but I was always wondering if I was getting a true reading for pressure to the crank. Just as I thought, there is a difference in pressure readings. Using 20w50 oil, the difference I noticed was just under 10 psi at high idle, 1500 rpm, and the bike warmed up.
Main oil port @ 200 degrees, idle was 10 psi and 1500 RPMs was above 60 psi.
Head oil port @ 200 degrees, idle was 5 psi and @1500 RPMs was below 50 psi.
I used the bottom bango M8 fitting part of a head oil feed line, cutting the line with a tubing cutter just below the bend at the tee. The line is 1/4" od, and using a premium SS compression fitting works perfectly to mount the gauge to the oil line. This allowed me to use a port on the case that feeds the crank bearings and put the gauge where it's mounted as shown. I Made a aluminum bracket to help hold the gauge rigid, using a stud and nuts to retain the bracket.

Very clean Duke! I’m curious what the psi would be with 10-40 oil. Your thoughts?

I'm not sure Shores. I did notice when first starting the motor cold that the oil pressure was alot higher. 40+ psi idle cold, 50 degrees in my garage.

Nice install Duke! I like it. Where abouts did you get the gauge? 100psi?

The gauge is a 1.5" liquid filled 0 to 60 psi, ordered from eBay. I'm going to put a 0 to 80 psi gauge on it soon, as the pressure is above 70 on cold start ups.
The Marshall gauges are a very good gauge.

Does the gauge mount to the bracket using the philips head screw on the back?

No. The gauge is liquid filled, and removing one of those screws would let the mineral oil leak out. I'll post on how I did this with a c-clip soon.

That's cool! I need to clean my garage and find the old rusty oil line I replaced.

Would be interesting to see the difference between 600 rom, 650, 700 etc up to 950 rpm in 50 rpm increments (verified with a goo tach like an EZ tach on a plug wire) to see difference in warm idle psi as measureD more accurately at the main oul port......to show people how oil pressure is affected at idleast when it's too low.....

Duke, as usual, great neat job. Do you think you can post a list of components you used?

Ok, I'll try to write something up with pictures soon. So far the 80 psi gauge I installed is working great.
The Swagelok® 1/4 Tube x 1/8 NPT Pipe FEMALE STRAIGHT CONNECTOR 316 Stainless Steel fitting isn't cheap at $10.00 per, but is very dependable for sealing the tubing to the fitting.
The gauge to the bracket takes a little work to fabricate, as you will see when I post some pictures on how I did this.
                Stay tuned.

Ok, Here is some pictures I made up to help give ideas for mounting a oil gauge. The oil port that the pictures shows is one of the main feeds for the left side of the engine.
