So what you're saying is someone needs to invent a mechanism that'll sheer the drive belt in half the instant the transmission locks up, sort of like how an airbag goes off in a collision. Once the belt is sheered the rear tire spins freely again, thus allowing some kind of control after such a catastrophic failure.

I'm sure this team can come up with something by the end of the weekend?

I believe the proper descriptor would be 'little person' with a razor knife.

        Vertically-challenged person?
        Small guy?
        Munchkin, aka Wizard of Oz?

Whatever, but he/she would have to be REALLY fast.

I do have a spare, fully intact, BMW airbag laying around if anyone wants to come up with a prototype.

        Maybe Duke ?

How about a freewheel like a bicycle? When the chain stops driving the rear wheel continues to coast forward. Actually some type of guard close to the chain to keep large objects like broken shafts out of the chain and still allow the chain to travel through the oil bath. That’s a tough one.

Problem would be no compression braking. Throttle-off and the bike freewheels. I was thinking about the same thing.

Maybe some kind of breakaway in the rear hub would be a thought, induced only with enough force, like a sheer-pin on a boat propeller.

My take on this is, he replaced the motor and the transfer case in two parts. The transfer drive gear retaining nut wasn't torqued to the proper specifications and didn't have the locking washer installed.
When a failure like this happens, a hell of a shock load hits all of the drive train components and bearings.

I would think when that shaft snaps like you said it puts a load on everything else. I don't know if I would be comfortable using anything left of the drivetrain after something like that. My fear would be that something else was stressed and maybe stress cracked and later on down the road that part could then break.

So from what I'm gathering the new bike had a bad motor and the donor motor was maybe hooked to the transfer case of the bad motor? I'm still very confused and exactly what happened other than it really sucks and it's a good thing no one got hurt.

That's a good point. I was thinking complete motor/tranny swap, but maybe just the motor itself?

I have a primitive mind in that way.

Now I have to go back to reread the other two threads!!

          Dangit--

Im like you LugNut, I myself would not trust any of the transmission or transfer case components for future use, along with the cases themselves.

If the lock washer or installed, and Loctite would use the first time around, I don’t think this would ever happen.

I would agree but others have reported issues with the end of the shaft snapping off. Loctite wont help that. That would require duct tape.

Duct tape only works at speeds under 50 mph. Beyond that you've got to cut up some paper clips and place them strategically around the stem itself, followed by aluminum foil, duct tape, and coated with rapid-dry super glue.

You have to remove and repeat every 30-60 days to be on the safe side.

Hey! It’s called 200 mph tape for a reason. What’s this 50 mph stuff
