Under the key cover plate that you open on the gas cap. Open it put a mirror under it and there is a number on the backside of it

that sucks. maybe take the title or registration to a dealer and see if they have access to the code or just use a good old fashion locksmith.

Well shit. Take the gas tank cap into a locksmith see if you can use that to make a key If not then you may have to remove your ignition assembly which is kind of a pain but doable. I know a guy on this form and on Facebook has an ignition assembly he removed very nicely with key for sale for $140.

Well here's the just a dumb question maybe, my daily Rider that probably has 5 000 key on key off Cycles, key is getting kind of sticky.. in spite of annual applications of like dry lubricant. I would love to just be able to go there and flick a switch and turn the whole thing on like Harley with the fob or without the fob I don't care who's going to steal the freaking road Star? Anyway I can put a defeater on out of some sort anybody done that yet. I know when I try to remove an ignition switch off my spare wrecked bike that I bought for a motor that ignition switch is a bare to remove

Smokescreen had a YouTube video where he installed a different key ignition (building a bobber) and showed the wires to use. There is a motorcycle keyless ignition system some road star and Liner guys have used (Watchdog I think is the name)

Have you reached out to a Yamaha dealer to see if they can get that information via the VIN? I picked up an '03 a few months ago. The original bill of sale had the key # written on it so I was easily able to order a key online via the number. I'd think Yamaha would have a record somewhere of that info.

You will find your lost key as soon as you get back from the lock smith. Lol
That's what would happen with me, unless 2023 is a better year.

Dealers can't get the key code off the VIN, there is no correlation & Yamaha doesn't keep records on key codes.
Your only (slim) hope is to give a dealer (or me) the VIN & I can tell you where the bike was originally sold.
With that you can take a chance that the dealer still has the setup/PDI sheet for that bike and assuming the person building the bike filled out the sheet properly, that the Key Code is written on the PDI sheet.

Consider the fact that dealers don't keep records after 5 years in their stores. A locksmith might be your only realistic option.
Yamaha's parts suppliers quit stamping key codes under the key cover a very long time ago.

Yamaha doesn't make & never has made lock assemblies, they buy them from various suppliers & install them on the assembly line.
It's just like how General Motors VW & Ferrari don't make keys, seatbelts or the plastic ductwork for auto air conditioning.

when did they quit stamping it under the fuel cap cover? Mine is a 2007 and it is under there. Or I'll say there is a number under there and for some reason.

This is from my experience with locksmiths, not specifically with Road Stars. Locksmith can pick the lock and get your cap off. I’ve seen a locksmith take a lock apart and file down a key to fit that lock. They can also change the tumblers to a new config. Again, just my experience with locksmiths. Good luck.

Wherever you lost the keys, locksmith experts are always there to make you the duplicate keys and nowadays it can be available at the same day. Highly advanced key cutting machines are available with which a locksmith can cut and make new keys at the same day and even program it also.
