  • empty tank before removing on a carb'd bike? and a question about reading jets

I've read a lot of posts that summarize to "nah you don't need to empty the tank before you take it off"
but i'm concerned that those are for a different year - I just don't understand the mechanism that would prevent the fuel from dumping out when I disconnect things. or does the petcock come off with the tank?

Also - my bike was re jetted when a previous owner put on cobra pipes, but it still has stock air cleaner. I'm looking to put on a BAK and wondering if i'll need to rejet. the shop paperwork doesn't tell me what type or size of jets were put in.
Can I pull em out and just look at them and tell somehow? what are the chances that I'll have the right jets for my "new" setup? or do I just rejet and not take a chance?

The jets should be numbered, mine have been. You don't have to empty the tank but it's much less awkward if you do. or at least down to a 1/4 or less. If it's full fuel will come out the vent if you tilt it a little, ask me how I know.

Turn petcock to off unplug fuel line from petcock (catch fuel with rag from that fuel line). Remove 10mm bolt from rear of tank, 3 5mm bolts from speedo cluster and remove (leave lay on a towel on handlebars or unplug the wrong harnesses and remove completely). Unhook the vent hose from top right of tank under speedo bezel. Lift tank up a little and unplug small wiring harness under tank at rear of tank....now you can remove.

The advantage of having the gas tank almost empty is that is less weight - it's kinda heavy when it's full.
Also, close the petcock a block from home so the carb also has a chance to empty a bit, it will be less of a spill, yes, the petcock remains with the tank.

You mention that the previous owner rejetted the bike, my guess is that it's a light rejet - Regardless, with the BAK you will need to adjust it - which means rejet, but it's not difficult do do.

What OPR said. To each his/her own, of course, but I drain the tank because it's easy, makes the tank light, and I don't have to worry about a spill.
