  • Rear brake upgrade question

Are there any upgrades for the rear brake? By upgrades I mean possibly a different caliper or different pads that would make the rear brake stronger. I've changed pads with OEM's, and changed the fluid.
The reason I'm asking is because I rode my son's HD Roadking the other day and the rear brake on that bike is awesomely strong.
    Ideas, anyone?

Are the rear brakes linked to the front on his H-D?

Any Roadstar I’ve ever ridden has the ability to quickly lock the rear tire. Even old worn out ones. Can’t get stronger than that. The vast majority of your stopping power is with the front brakes. Do you rely on your rear brake fairly heavily?

Amen! it's already too easy to lock it up.......

I’d agree with deerkilller. All the action is on the front. I hardly ever use the rear. Probably trail braking more than anything.

Is your rear disc “groovy”? That will reduce its power.

EBC HH rear pads and swap over to Prestone synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid. Noticable improvement

          1. I really don't know if the front brake is linked to the back brake on his HD
          2. I don't think I rely on the rear brake much. I do use it in tight turns as in "Ride Like A Pro", and yes, I rely on the front brake for actual stopping.
          3. Yes, after looking at the disc it is somewhat "groovy"..... not nearly as groovy as you, though, Shores! . I'll add to the list of things to change before riding to Eureka Springs.....along with new pads.
          4. Prestone DOT 4 synthetic is what I changed the fluid out with a couple of weeks ago...Are the Yamaha stock discs made to have sintered pads, or will they wear out faster?

I've been using EBC HH Sintered pads front & rear for 80K miles. The rotors seem to be just the same as when I got the bike. I've *heard* they wear out the rotors, but they don't seem to be wearing on mine.

Seeing as you going to be replacing brake fluid I would also consider replacing the rubber rear brake hose with a braided SS line.

I changed the fluid a couple of weeks ago already. I DID use the Prestone DOT4 synthetic.

SS braided lines make a big difference! It was one of the first mods I did when I bought my R*.

i would not upgrade the rear brake. its to easy to lock up as is. but you can make a big upgrade to the front brakes via caliper or pad swaps.
