  • Inverted Forks

Hey guys, maybe I missed it, but I don't think I've EVER heard/seen this before... Has anyone thought/tried/accomplished acquiring and installing any brand of inverted sport bike forks into our R* triple tree mounts???

I would love to do something like that with one of bikes. Seems to me the length and diameter is all that needs to be matched up, and if it was Yami, too, then maybe even our wheels, rotors and calipers might be a bolt-on?

I don't know... just thinking out loud, and yeh, I know our forks can be rebuilt with cool valves and springs, and all that, but I was also going for the look with one of mine, as well! And, Yami made a rather sporting model that didn't make it here to the states... I forget the model name, but we've had a picture of it here before. I run a single bolt-on R1 caliper on my bobber now, but some truly sporting forks on my solo-rider would suit me!

What does anyone else have to say?

Our fork tubes @ the triples are 43mm, find inverted forks that size & you're in business.
Just make sure they can hold at least 600 pounds (stripped Roadstar) or about 800 for a full bagger.

I think it's a cool idea Quest, albeit maybe not a practical one. Put $1500.00 forks on a $2000.00 motorcycle?

Doc, awesome eBay link... got me all kinds of thinkin'. Makes little sense, other than it would definitely be another look, wouldn't it?

Hey, if it's good enough for the MT01... Check the length though, it may change the rake a little, though that may not be a bad thing depending on how much.

So, some real headway has been made. First, our clamps are for a 43 mm tube. Second, and I had not considered it at the first, but weight IS a very real consideration, and our bikes are heavy. Third, R1 tubes abound and are cheap on eBay... but for some strange reason, a lot of them are BENT there. LOL I suppose I next need to learn what the mm dimension is at the top of the R1 tubes. Perhaps Roadie's table link above answers that for me. Of course, if an MT01 were being parted out... I'm sure they are all the time... I could simply buy a straight front end!

Lol, MT-01 are rare in Canada and were not sold in USA but you never know you could find one for less than $ 1,500

Ah, it's looking like R1 upper fork tubes are in excess of 50 mm, which makes perfect sense. So, now, it would even require a changing out of the triple-tree clamps, as well. I had wondered about that... didn't know if maybe they might taper at the top.

I have a set of R1 fork tubes in my shop. They’re yours for $6500.00. They even come attached to some more R1 parts, lol.

Just thinking a bit about this. Since our tubes having smaller tubes in the tree, by having the same size inverted in the tree have a really small tube below where axle and wheel mount? Not sure that it would handle the weight of our piggies we ride. Just a thought. Would maybe be best to swap an entire front end with beefier tubes in order to acheive the inverted thing.

FYI, they don't have to be R1 forks or even Yamaha forks, Just 43mm or do the triple clamps too. It's pretty common. You may have to work on the caliper mounts and axle, but it's doable.

Doc, I can bolt, assemble, re-assemble, tear down and fix up anything, but I don't have any of the tools to fabricate, or heavily modify. I was wondering if there might be something that could possibly be a bolt-on kind of a mod.

My suggestion is to look at an FZ09

The top tree needs to accept handlebars, unless you want to use clip-ons

I realized that, and it looked to me like the FZ09 top tree did accept handlebars.

Yes the FZ09 does use handle bars, the others mentioned don't, they use clip-ons. Need to take note of the relationship between the forks & steering stem also.
