are u the the old scottw from prev RSC? i want some of what your smokin, just kidding. Yeah you got me ta thinking the yamaha OEM oil chart is Viscosity and temperature based, it may not reflect the fact that synthetics have waaaaaay different viscosity characteristics, SO the 20-50 syn will have lower viscosity at 50 degr F than a Dino oil, but the same lubricating properties. that is why they are so good, because they dont "thin" as bad when HOT, or "thicken" when cold. they flow better when cold, etc.

He is the one and the same! Might he be taking things to an unhealthy extreme?

Questcap,no disrespect intended but like i already told you on the old RSC site if my posts bother you why dont you simply not read them because i got the same childish complaint form you on the old RSC site too, maybe you don't have enough to do!/LOL!!!

Maybe taking the same time you did to post something negative about a fellow RSC member would be better spent if you post something useful.

Anyway,I disagree with you because i feel it's not as you say " extreme at all " for me to point out something that some people may not realize or be thinking about which is many visc vs temp charts are based on std dino oil when in fact today's full syn oils of same grade flow much better/easier in cold temp likely having the ability to be used at lower temp then = grade std dino which is something they should keep that in mind.

With that in mind guys that are running for ex v-twin 20-50 full syn oil down to lowest temp of 40-45deg f vs std dino oil chart rec of lowest temp rec of 50deg f for 20-50 oil they could feel comfortable leaving the 20-50 syn oil in thier bikes and not have to go thru the time & money to change to 10-40 oil to ride bike in lowest temp of 40-45deg f.

And the same go's for when riding season changes back to warmer temp when they like to run 20-50 for better protection in summer heat not having to change the oil from 10-40 back to 20-50 again too all of which can be avoided for guys in this situation where the coldest temp they ride in is 40-45deg f with full syn 20-50 oil avoiding 2 full syn oil & filter changes to lighter 10-40 oil they would normally have done following the rec for std dino that by design doen't have as good cold flow rate as full syn oil of same grade does.

I was just trying to save some guys that ride in lowest temp of 40-45deg f temp the money & time of not having to do 1-2 not needed oil changes is why i bothered to take the time to post it to begin with.

I am sorry you feel my bringing things up like that which could be beneficial to some people (obviously not you) here in RSC that are in the 40-45deg F lowest temp situation annoys you.

    Happy motoring anyway!/LOL!!!

    Scott

JASO rating and other such things cost money to certify a product...some companies don't want to spend the money even though their products meet all the specs outlined. Buy any full synthetic V twin wet clutch compatible and throw in some of the Lucas zddp additive (like 1/4 bottle....bottle is $8) and ride the fucking thing. Change it every 4k-5k miles use a good filter and worry about climate change or tranny rights or whatever the hell else is in the news.

Also....we ride $1500-4000 old ass Jap metric vtwin cheaper than dirt bikes where you can get an entire used motor for $400-800. They are about the toughest vehicles made in terms of reliability and longevity. Any vtwin specific synthetic oil wet clutch compatiblet with enough zddp (use additive if not sure) will be absolutely fine in these bikes. They will all go 150k-250k miles with proper maintenance. So honestly.....it's just not that big of a deal all things considered. They real issues is that unless you were the original owner, and not many of us are, we are totally unsure of the maintenance done and products used on out 4-20 year old machines. I bought my last bike from original owner with maintenance records...Amsoil and Mobil 1 used since new with Wix filters (all written down with date and mileage)..m title in his name from 1999....

if someone found 5 new left over zero mile Roadstars....all same model/year....changed oil to 5 different synthetic Vtwin oils (let's say Amsoil, Mobil 1, Rotella T6, Quicksilver, and Castrol for example). Ran them on a stand using same filter same time/location etc. Holding all possible variables the same....analyzed old oil inspected motor etc ....did all the crazy shit no one in their right mind would ever do....IT WOULD NOT MATTER. If all the data showed one brand having better wear protection than another....people are still going to use whatever they have been using or a different brand for some irrational personal reason. It's human nature. Plus....the "measurable" difference between wear protection among the 5 brands I listed would probably be minimal and statistically insignificant in terms ofnthe longevity of the motor.

as a Psychologist I am sure this is the case. I make my decisions based on data and reseaech.....unless I feel like being irrational and choose something based on emotion or personal experience....lol.

Amsoil service bulletin states this oil contains 1379 ppm zddp and 1266 on the phosphorus, probably the same as the 20/50 vtwin or pretty close to it , it looks to me the really high zinc oils are racing oils

Thank you for taking the time to contact AMSOIL with your question.

Good to know about the zinc levels, but without rereading this whole thread, I forget, where did we end up on wet clutch support?

We have flat vs roller lifters. They require a high
                                  level of zinc for protection.

When did Motorcycle specific oil come out? Someone was telling me that they have been using normal car oil without any I'll effects? I'm not trying it just curious.

Other than the Zinc additive and think it's more that what is not in motorcycle oil then what is in it from other types of oil?
