If you are talking about an HSR 42 or 45 the main jet will interchange and the pilot jet will not. The pilot jet for the OEM carb is a little longer and will smash/bend on the end when you tighten it down They won't be the correct size for the new HSR carb so it won't really matter anyway. Download a copy of the HSR tuning manual, it will help you to better understand the tuning procedure difference between the 2 carbs. The HSR uses different size needles to get to your final tune. There are 3 needles to choose from. To cut thru the chase maybe just ask the question here to see what jetting setup someone else with you mods is using on there HSR carb.

carb turned up , its a hsr42 , it has at present a 175 main jet , i fitted it to bike with hyper charger and ran terrible , swapped the hyper charger for a cone , still ran terrible lumpy ,coughing and spluttering , and back firing on down revs , i have long straight vance and hines pipes , and will be using the cone (two hyper chargers up for grabs if anyone wants a trade and stock seats as that is now changed also) , got a rebuid kit on its way so will be stripping down , any advice always welcomed

That main is WAY too big in a Road Star. If you tell these guys what needle is in it they will tell you if you need to change the needle, but most land at a 165 on the main, so it's soggy as shit. Also, the HSR tuning manual is a free download. Another tip on the flat slide HSR that is different than the stock CV carb is that the mixture screw is managing air, not fuel, so clockwise is richer (reducing the air bleed) and counterclockwise is leaner (adding more air to the idle mix)

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

If you use the TPS, than you won't need a different ECU.
I suggest that you use the TPS, because it sends a signal to the ECM that control the timing advance.

hmmmmm , correct me if i wrong , but i think the tps was on the old carb not the hsr42 , i still have a lot of reading up to do , so forgive me if i wrong

sorry to bombard you duke , i am wanting to eventually get higher revs and release her full potential with a little pencil cell also , if i change the ecu to a 3000 would i get the best out of it with a vacume or would i still need the tps , again sorry to bombard

Yes, the HSR will need a bracket to add the TPS onto it.
A lot of Roadies run the TPS, but you have to make a mounting bracket or have to send the carb out for this mod. I have built several of these brackets.
Some of the Roadies use a vacuum switch that tricks the ECM into full retard or full advance.
I like the TPS because 95% of my riding is cruising and the ignition timing is close to where it needs to be.

hmmm just read a post on the hsr tps brackets etc on here from earlier in the year , looks like i gotta make or aquire the bracket , if anyone can show me the way to a page with the bracket made up i will have a go building one or arranging one built , i here you alll in the tps discussion , would a new power commander make the timing better or would it hinder the timing , ie just low or high , pros and cons please people , i am used to four cylinder jap engines , tyming advancers etc never been a one for to much tech in bikes , hence sticking with carb modles . was even looking at getting rid of clocks and having more simple clocks on cowl i waiting to fabricate

I use the Dyna 3000 because I'm running the JE pistons, approximately 10 to 1 compression and having to retard the timing a little. You don't need a programmer if you haven't changed the cams or pistons. If your wanting to play with the timing or raise the RPM limit, you might want to think about one then.

This is how I have mounted the TPS on the HSR42.
