Recheck your plug gap. When I changed mine I didnt gap them and they where to tight. Got shitty mileage. Pull and gapped and problem solved.

If mine ever dropped to 25 I’d be looking for a puddle on the ground! My worst was 34, and that was a 90mph blast down I-45 for a bit over an hour straight. Mountains are gonna take some from you (maybe 3-4 mpg) put pulling the gears WFO repeatedly will pour it out the exhaust. Since you say it does not matter, I’m sure you have tuning issues, but a lot of it is in your leaded wrist. I ASSUME (I don’t know why) you are doing the math for your MPG, although MANY folks lately it seems equate the gauge or the light with gas mileage, and neither means a thing on a fuel consumption check.

Wherever you go in life, ride there if at all possible.

Thanks Duke, what do I need to do the job? Looking forward to putting miles on it, so I want to do it soon.

You are showing that your bike carb is stock, so I'm assuming that you have the stock air box. The carb hasn't been worked on, If that's what you have and the bike is running good, but getting bad fuel mileage, then I'm thinking the air filter is dirty, and, or your driving habits.

The stock air box with a K&N filter doesn't help air flow, "in fact" it less air flow if you have the filter oiled. A stock new paper filter will flow more air. A stock air box is limiting air flow when you are on the throttle hard due to the box air intake hole size. If you open up this hole, it really helps for this situation.
Always make sure you have the choke, "enricher", off when your riding.

When I bought my 2006 I only put Premium gas in it, 91 octane or higher.
              You know, "the good stuff".
Couldn't break above 30 mpg no matter how timid I tried to be on the throttle.

Then I read the owner's manual & followed the factory recommendation for 87 octane regular.
Mileage shot right up to ~40 mpg.
Almost 10 years later I'm still getting 38-40 as long as I don't pay extra for 'the good stuff', then it drops back below 30.

More octane is not more power or better gas, it's cooler burning gas that often won't finish burning in the cylinder before being pumped out to the pipes.
Moist black soot inside your pipes are often an indicator that you're not burning all the fuel going into your relatively low compression Roadstar engine.

I was fed that line of garbage since I was about 19.
Wasn't til I was in my 40's that I found out what octain ratings were really about.

I have another question, I never need to choke to start, starts right away but when I go some where restart it, it cranks well but doesn't start as easy as cold.. I still like to practice power braking, but this it stalls when I power brake. the roadstar is new to me an 05, Silverado 1700 all stock baffles were removed by other owner.. I believe, I'm get just under 30mpg.. Just turn 20k miles, hard to believe that miles are that low for an 05, I've only had it 2weeks. I just want it ,100%..

Your running rich cold and even richer when hot. What carb jets do you have?

Don’t assume. Owners and mechanics do strange things. Change all fluids so you know when and what was done last. Remove the air intake filter and replace or clean it. Run two tanks of Seafoam through it per instructions on the can. Remove the carb and document what you have inside.

This thread popped up so I am happy to report that after 22 gallons through my tank on three long distance day trips I got an average of 51 miles per gallon on my 2008 fuelie. Yahoo!

Dang that's great for a fuelie! I think best I've recorded is a tad over 40. Generally it seems 35 is most common.

                        Kickstarting this thread again …
I’ve read through everything here twice and maybe I’m ok, but I don’t know.

Got an 03 Silverado last year, outside of 2 to 1 exhaust, it’s stock. Over the winter I had a mechanic go through the whole thing since it was sitting around collecting dust for years. Bike runs great and mechanic said it’s super clean and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Ive almost ran out of gas twice in the past two weeks. I did two tests and one was 21mpg and the second was 23mpg.
                        I’m a little shocked.

I do live in the mountains, The Valley town is at 6200’ elevation. So there are mountain passes. Highway speeds are 75-80mph. Yesterday (when I got 23mpg) there was some strong sidewinds and headwinds. I’m a fairly newer rider, especially to this style of bike, so I’m not ripping around like a bat out of hell.

I was assuming I’d be getting 35-40 mpg. But I’m way off that. Any advice?

Your profile shows everything is stock but the exhaust. The MPG depends on a lot of factors, driving habits, weights, tuning of the engine, etc., etc.. The first thing I would check is the tune of your engine and check the jet sizes in the carb. A stock air box, with no mods done to it, is limited air flow, and by opening up the air intake in the box will greatly improve performance and fuel mileage as long as you jet the carb appropriately. 167.5 main, 37.5 pilot and a Baron's needle set on the 4th notch from the top is a good starting point. With your bike being stock, then just use regular fuel, not premium, and the less alcohol the better for fuel mileage.

you need to look inside the carb to see what the jetting currently is and what groove the clip is in. It may even have the OEM non adjustable needle in it if so we can advise from there.
