  • I am only getting 25 mpg

A 2006 Yamaha Road Star Silverado and only getting 25 MPG any suggestions? I have Cobra pipes.

It is fuel injected, do you have a PCIII or Cobra 2000 fuel manager?

Largely dependent on riding style. If you spend a lot of time over 70 mph, that's about right. I have an '06 also with aftermarket pipes and that's what I get on the highway.

Like Father Pobasturd said: over 70 mph, your gas mileage goes way down. If I keep my bike 70 or less, I'll get over 50 mpg. Driving styles and carb set up will make the difference on you mileage.
A friend of mine told me he didn't believe me, so I told him I would service the oil and dial in his carb for 200. bucks. After I was finished, we went on a 150 mile road trip, driving 65 to 70 mph and he was amazed getting 52.8 mph. I myself got 54.5 mph, but I'm 80lbs lighter.

What is dial the carb? I just bought an 1700 2005, only has 20k miles, does have black soot in pipe too, was surprised gas mileage is only in the 20s. What should I do on this.

Dial in the carb means; to tune the carb. Checking all of the ports, jets and adjusting the PMS.
Check your pilot and main jet size, lower number = less fuel.

Any chance you can share a diagram or something showing where is the PMS I searched it up and couldn't find any diagram. My bike used to do 40 mpg before switching to cobra and Dyno jets now it's 25mpg and I suspect it's the air/fuel ratio (smells a bit).

I start the bike w/o choke since the jets. Likely rich. Help... please

Did you forget to carry the "1" I go everywhere at 70+mph and still get 38 to 40mpg but it is a colder climate here, could that be a factor? FatherPB has a "dry heat" where he is.

Air density does effect the charge, but the CV carbs are fairly good at compensating for the air changes.

Sadly, the information you gave us is not enough to make informed suggestions. Please take the time to fill out your profile. It is where we go to find basic information about your ride. Also, your personal information is important as well. There may be someone around the corner from you that can share his/her experience.

Somethings off. I get mid to low 40's at 70 mph. Your jetting is the first place to look at. But like has been said, we need more info first.

+1 on the carb jetting. Also, when was the last time you replaced your plugs and air filter? Does your bike have a fairing or windshield? Are you a heavy rider? Do you have a lot of gear on your bike?

I'm a big guy with a lot of gear on my bike, including a batwing, and I ride above 70 mph all the time, and I average around 36/37 mpg. But I also have my bike tuned for performance, which sacrifices a few mpg.

BTW *Where* do you do most of your riding? Is it mostly short trips around town where you constantly have to pull the enricher knob out at start up? That will do it too.

Just changed the plugs and cleaned air filter. I have a windshield. I only need to choke the bike when engine is cold

OK , I'm 210 lbs. carry about 50 lbs. of "necessary" stuff , windshield with full lowers , 170 main , 37.5 pilot , 2.5 out on PMS . Went full gravity feed on gas and cleaned air filter. '01 Midnight with Trunk and bags. Did a 299.4 very spirited , 'tween 70-90 run through these Ozark Hills yesterday. Used 5.7 gallons of gas . 52 MPG !!! I'm amazed at this 106,000 mile STAR

As mentioned, a bit more info would be a good thing. Even with stock jetting that would be low. If somebody was messing with your jetting, then it could possibly be that crappy.
I’d be inclined to suggest swapping out the needle and seat for the OEM replacement, if the needle and seat in the carb now, is stock. With mileage in the low to mid twenties, fuel getting past the oring on the seat half of the needle and seat, would be typical.

Are your pipes black with soot?

And, just a few rambunctious launches per tank, whilst twisting the grip to the throttle stop going up through the gears, are are enough to send any decent MPG average into the toilet.

I am a conservative driver at. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm doing freeway speeds between 70 and 80 or if I'm doing a back road speeds of 45 to 50 my mileage stays right around 25 to 26 miles per gallon. I I am a heavy Rider and sometimes go two up. My pipes do have black set and my first project is to take off the carburetor and rejet it.

If you constantly get 25 mpg you got problems. I'm reasonably sure my bike is not jetted right but even at that I get 40 mpg putting around. I'm a heavy rider also. (320 lbs). If you complete your profile page there are people here that can get you close on your jetting. Might save you some guesswork.

I get concerned when my mileage drops below 40 mpg! There could be a plethora of reasons why you only get 25 mpg. I would start with the carb (if you have one). If you have stock jetting and air box with the after market pipes your mileage will not be as good. Jetting is very important and not that difficult to address. I am using a 167.5 main jet with the clip set on 3 1/2, stock pilot jet, float adjusted as perfectly as I can get it with a machinist's rule and my eyeball, PMS set at 2 1/2 turns out from light seat, K & N air filter - I think it's a 1980 - the oval one. I rarely go under 70 mph and I still get >40 mpg - usually 43 - 45 even 2 up.
If I'm riding with a group and going slow (50 - 60) my mileage jumps up to around 50.

2007 Road Star 1700 (Canada, mixed riding style) my MPG dropped from 37 MPG down to 30 MPG it is significant since the tank is 16L (4G) which gives me about 210 km (130 miles) that is in many group rides the minimum between fuels...so very motivated to increase my distance between. The changes I made included Dyno jets (carb) and Cobra slip-on pipes. Yes the Dyno jet lets more gas through (I know because I can no longer use choke to start, maybe my mechanic used the wrong (too big?) jet? love to hear from your experience I really want to try and improve this back to what I had before the Dyno jets (which I really like, runs strong and no backfires).

I pretty much ride around at 80mph on all freeways or I'm climbing up the mtn 1000 up to 8900 ft or hauling down the mtn I live on so I think I average about 20 mpg.....hahaha, feels like I'm always filling that pig up

Most MPG stats you read on the paperwork of all motorcycle brochures will have some fine print that states the mph the numbers are based on and you'll find a lot of them are based on 55mph so unfortunately most people never actually see those numbers

I have an 07 with aftermarket pipes, hard bags and a batwing. I bought it end of the season last year and spent the winter giving her some love. She is a thirsty girl, I’m averaging 150 kms per fill which I think is even less at around 20 mpg! I do have some carbon on the exhaust and am going to take a look at the carb just as soon as a rainy afternoon hits.

Wow, that's bad mileage. Do you have the stock air box?
I got to thinking about faster speeds and the stock air box, and feel the mileage will really drop if it hasn't been modified for more air. The stock paper filter is fine, but the box would be limiting factor. Especially the 1999 thru 2003 models.

I tried to look at your bike in the profile pic and it appears to have a stock airbox and aftermarket exhaust. Start on something simple like checking the air filter. If it is dirty or plugged up with crap it will get bad MPG. If you are having throttle fun and running hard it will get bad MPG with the stock jetting. Now if you want to fix it and liven up the bike we can do that by changing to a different air filter and rejetting the carb. Doing those 2 things will dbl your MPG if you are only getting 20 MPG.

I did crack open the stock air box and found a K&N style filter. It didn’t need cleaning so looks like it’s time to hit the carb and give it a little love too.

I am guilty of of hitting the throttle! Hard not too with the sweet sound of the true duals!
