  • 02 sensor bungs

I have a set of V&H Longshots from a 1600 that I want to put on my 2009 1700. Looking for info on what size 02 sensor bungs (mm size) I need and where to get them so I can weld them onto the V&H pipes.

I need to know that as well. My Bassani head pipes did not come with the Bungholio's and I want to add an AFR meter.

I'm about to add an AFR gauge to my 1700 soon. When I find out what size the sensor needs, I'll post it.
Someone else may post an answer sooner though.

the o2 bung for the AFR gauge is not the same size as the ones needed for stock o2 sensors.

          Sorry Grubsie And DaveJ.
I completely missed the part that said the bike is an '09. So Grubsie needs to hook up his O2 sensor... gotcha.

            Stock narrow band O2 sensor 10mm x 1.25mm
            Wide band o2 sensor 18mm x 1.5mm
            Hope this helps.

Go to rockauto.com , they have 02 sensor parts. You may have to know in advance what size you need but they have weld in parts.

              Thanks damateerman.

Wound up making my own from some 5/8" steel rod, them drilled and tapped them. Now just gotta get them welded on the pipes.

you could have drilled a hole and just welded the correct size nut onto the pipe. Also make sure you weld them in the correct location so that the wires are long enough to plug in without making an extension.

Thought about that, actually bought some nuts. I decided to make some bungs out of some steel rod I had laying around so that the tip of the 02 sensors were extended inside the new pipes at the same distance as in the old stock pipes. The nuts weren't thick enough for this.

The front is in the right position for the connectors to plug in comfortably and not very visible on the pipe.

The rear would have had to be located on the top of the header pipe to plug in comfortably. I didn't like the look so I drilled the pipe near the bottom at a downward angle towards the bottom of the engine so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb. I already extended the wires on the rear sensor 4" to be able to reach the plug. This way, the sensor is not visible unless you intentionally look for it.

Curious though, should I use some type of sealant on the threads when I put the sensors in for good?

Got the bungs welded on and getting ready to mount the Longshots on but it will have to wait until I get back from vacation in 2 weeks. I have been thinking about a way to rubber mount the exhaust to the rear support to help reduce vibration to the frame. Has anyone else done this? if so, how you did it? Pros/cons with this approach?

I think 1 of the cons would be the vibration transfer to the head flanges and exhaust studs. My guess is that you will be chasing exhaust leaks at that spot, but that is just thinking out loud.

grubsie, I know this is an old post. Just curious what the thread size ended up being for the O2 sensors. I have a set of what I believe are Hard Chrome pipes I picked up with some parts. If I can add the bungs I might throw them on for grins and see what they sound like.

Looks like with some further searching, this question was ask in another thread. It appears the answer is 10mm.

Second edit: If I'd have just read the f'n service manual I would have found this answer as well.

why can't the bungs from the OEM exhaust be removed and reused?

I'd have to cut them off and re-weld to the other set of pipes. I don't want to damage the stock exhaust should I want to put it back on. Looks like the bungs can be found for under $10.

I posted a question just now about a related topic. If you have a fuel injected roadstar and you put on pipes that don't have oxygen sensors and you just bought 02 simulators for the oxygen sensors would that be an issue with the computer running correctly on the bike?is the computer needing the O2 sensor information for anything other than emissions compliance? Will it not run correctly if you do not have that connection between the pipes and the computer?

Just got done talking to a motorcycle racer a guy with low 8 second sport bikes and he has a road liner He's going to make ungodly fast. He told me on these bikes the computer doesn't get controlled per se by the oxygen sensor so that disconnecting the O2 sensor would not harm the engine because the O2 sensor information is not used to change parameters to the tune. So with that in mind why would we want to go to the trouble of welding in bungs on exhaust???

The only thing I could think of is if your state required an annual inspection. That would likely be considered bypassing a part of the smog/emission system. But that's just a guess.
