  • Carb needle slider woes!,

    Help!
started on the barons jetting tonight all going ok until I pulled the plastic plug out to get the needle out..
the needle that was in was perhaps a dynojet needle. Anyhow, put new needle in following ‘DaveJ’ specs, but when I went to put the plug back in to retain the needle, to my dismay I found that 2 of the four plastic clip type holders had broken at the base..
my question is this.. is there a work around for this problem please?

Anyone and everyone please chime in all advice welcomed

Btw everything else such as the diaphragm are ok, bit of carbon build up on the slider that was easily cleaned and it slides fine with no wear marks noted on the slider

Will that be a mikuni part or Yamaha part and does it come with diaphragm?
I did everything to ensure success ie pulled straight out, and the o ring was lubed prior to insertion. It’s more than likely the plastic just got brittle.
hope I van get another as everything seems harder to source these days..

I would inspect your diaphragm very very closely. It's only another 30 bucks to replace it.

          Throttle valve is # 4SV-14112-00-00

            Diaphragm is fine
i did a work around by gradually shortening a sharpie pen lid so that it slides over the retainer plug and holds the o ring in the remaining two clips. Hope it works.. we have trouble getting yam parts here in oz at the mo.. I’ll still try and get one though but in the meantime see if this works..
might see if I might put silicon in around the plug in it’s pen plastic sleeve seeing as it’s essentially knackered anyway I’d imagine you get new piston and plug too?
thanks lugnut and Dave J for support so far

              Thanks for part number
I was thinking I’d need to go to mikunii..

Buy one of those cheap carburetor rebuild kits for the Yamaha Grizzly that comes with the slide. That slide will work in your carb. Double check the slide for smooth sliding and if needed, use 400 polishing clothe to smooth things up. The bowl gasket and float valve will also work in your carb..

If you have better luck obtaining Mikuni parts I'm sure they could supply it no problem. The carb is a Mikuni BSR40

Thanks. Googling the grisly parts doesn’t seem to come up with anything, mikuni either. I’ll ring Yamaha today and mikuni. I’m about 70% confident in the sleeve mod I’ve done. But just wondering about gluing the sleeve to the bottom of the slider. The plug sits in fairly firm. Worst case scenario would be everything coming loose and needle valve moving up out of alignment me thinks.

the needle moving up/down isn't a good thing either. It could definitely leave you stranded. Keep in mind the small distance between the grooves that the clip goes into and how much difference it makes if the needle is in the wrong groove. Now imagine the needle moving a inch or so and/or not closing off the gas supply.

You might be able to get those parts from a Harley Davidson dealer, if you show them the parts (that is, if you have a knowledgeable parts man/woman) Some of the earlier model Harley's use a carb somewhat similar to the BSR40.

The slider mod worked but was able to order a new one.
discovered the bike hade been running stock jet -165, with dynojet needle and pms was 4 turns out
so, 170 has gone in and pms to 2/12 turns out. Have yet to road test but it should be better now
poor capture of pen lid mod but you’d get the drift

Getting the new slider at the weekend. Worth a try though, and Dave I can only guess the moment that the needle moved too much = running like shit and then stranded!
I can get a diaphragm ex Japan but will order when more than likely needing to do the swing arm bushes but need to inspect first.

Ps are the diaphragms tricky to remove and replace? ie putting old diaphragm on new slider

They just stretch around the slide. It takes about 30 seconds to do if you take a sip of coffee while you are doing it.

Better make it a single shot then otherwise I’d be getting a tad un careful..

Soz all but I have another thing to ask. The stock pipes on mine have been stage 3 by the looks and sound. So do I go 167.5 main jet and 4th groove on needle with single washer below clip, or
170 and take out the single washer below the clip,

barons say for 99-03 models clip should be on groove Groups and 170 with pipes with baffles.. bit confusing. I’ve read muckers article on jetting the road star too..
putting new slider in tomorrow so thought I’d ask now!
                                    cheers

if they have been completely gutted use the 170 main if they have been modified to stage2 you can se the 167.5 main It should be 4th groove with a plastic spacer and 1 silver washer under the clip regardless of what main jet you use.
