dis-assemble the starter motor and clean and inspect it for worn brushes and broken holders. It is one of the more common issues.

I agree with this … clean armature, inspect brushes, confirm brush plate undamaged…of course one step further…,replace battery cables and make sure a good clean ground on frame for the battery negative cable…

Still doesnt confirm decompression solenoid working though…

I'm also still leaning towards the compression release. After watching the video's, it sounded like, to me anyway, that it wasn't turning over fast as it should even with the plugs out. Maybe someone else will concur. Y'know, I have wondered if it would be possible to rig up a manual compression release, ala old school 2 stroke dirt bike? Take the electronics out of the equation. But then, I have also dreamed of magneto ignition and a kick starter. This is how my old '49 H-D EL Panhead was set up. So simple, so dependable, no need for a battery, had like, 6 wires on the whole bike. I could kick start that bike with my hand. Of course, it was really low compression and would only run around 80 mph tops. I think it would be really cool to set up a RS like that, and I will, soon as I win the Powerball.

I agree and have been trying for a couple days to get him to manually push the spoon for decomp while cranking the engine. Can't seem to get that accomplished so I'm gonna set back and watch this one.

Hello again.

had the cam out again to check the marks sat as they should.
I had to turn it a bit when I took it apart, so I'm a bit doubtful if it sat correctly.

but got it assembled as shown in the pictures without moving anything.
it actually seemed like it hurt a little when I drove the engine around.
I will work on it today and will come with an update later.

You have indexed it correctly… we are still concerned about the decompression solenoid… leave spark plugs out and activate the starter.. the core pin should push the spoon out about 5-6 mm… does this happen..??

Other concerns regarding the starter… have you dis-assembled and cleaned all the old brush dust from it… most people will polish the commutator (the copper part of the armature which the brushes make contact with) using a 600-1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper… use compressed air and contact cleaner to remove your sanding dust… make sure that you remove all residue from the commutator grooves between the copper plates.. inspect the brush plate for cracks… and reassemble..

The battery cables are also know as a weak link… most people will replace due to age and corrosion… many believe larger gauge cables help… a member here makes a replacement set using larger gauge wire… highly recommended… and of course cleaning the frame ground connection…
