  • 2002 road star clutch cable

I've had my bike for over 2 yrs now. Got a clutch put in when I got it. Since then I have put a little over 15k miles on it but I keep breaking the clutch cable right at the clutch lever. It keeps breaking the lead end off the cable. Is anybody else having this problem?

  • #2
I have 70,000 mi on my OEM clutch cable. If you are buying cheap Chinese crap you need to get an oem cable or another high quality cable. Make sure you lube it inside the cable with a dry cable lubricant and grease the fittings at both ends.

I'm not sure if there ordering oem cable when I call the shop, but I do put cable lube in it and everything. This is my 4th cable in 15k miles

If it is an oem clutch cable and there's nothing wrong with the clutch perch and it's well lubricated. I would look to the bearing assembly that pushes the clutch in or the adjustment. Who did the clutch and is it is it a Barnett clutch? Who was adjusting the clutch cable

It's not the Barnett clutch. The shope put the clutch in over 2 yrs ago. I order the cables from them but I put them on.the bike shifts and runs fine, and it's not hard to push the clutch in at all.

If a shop is doing it for you, I would hold them responsible for its premature breakage. There is obviously something wrong with its installation or with your clutch installation. I would also quit using that shop and order the cable directly from a Yamaha dealer and install it yourself. Extremely easy to install.

I put the cable on my self. Not sure if I could do a clutch job myself

Is the end coming off the cable or is the cable getting frayed and breaking the actual cable itself. If the cable is getting frayed and breaking I would install a new perch or at least inspect the 1 you have to see why or what is fraying it

Right at the lead end piece it's breaking there

What are you calling a perch?

I thought i heard somewhere these cables didn't need lubing? Is that true?

They have a liner in them that don't require lube but the end at the lever still needs lubed

Pics would help. You should order an oem clutch cable from Yamaha yourself.

I'm assuming you have stock handlebars and not taller ones? Pics of bike, Handlebar, clutch cable at lever and down side of bike may help...

The part that attaches to your left handlebar which the clutch lever attaches to. you have a perch on the left for your clutch lever and you have a perch on the right which is attached to the master cylinder for your front brake.

This is where it breaks every time. This is the lever end

I'd check where right where that barrell goes into the lever for a rough spot in the aluminum. Seems like there is a burr or something of the like, rubbing right there on the cable.

I agree there is either a rough spot or something too tight not allowing it to swivel the little bit needed when the lever is pulled.

I suspect it is not oem. At the cylinder end there should be a nylon bushing that wraps around the cylinder for OEM.

No it don't. It has a stainless sleeve that fits into a small bracket of some sorts

That’s likely the problem. Order the OEM and be done with it. Make sure it’s not on bassakwards.

you have to make sure that cl cable routing is correct, if it makes too many tight turns, it may do that. p52 service manual
