  • Progressive springs vs Racetech?

I need to change out the fork oil & do some front end maintainence on my 2000 1600, but am giving some thought to upgrading the front end with either progressive springs, or Racetech springs w/gold emulators. My riding style is only moderately aggressive, and almost entirely on paved roads (after all, we are talking about a cruiser here ). I ride & 2-up maybe 20% of the time. At 250ish I’m a bigger guy and think there would be a benefit on upgrading the front end so I would like your thoughts on which option to use... which leads me to my other question on the difficulty of doing front end work. So far I’ve been able to rebuild the clutch, install the roadwing & rap, put the new oil pump gear in, install/bleed new brakes & such, so I think I can handle this.... I just havent done it. Thanks in advance for the thoughts & recommendations.

There was recently a thread published on here about that very thing including how to step by step video. jd750ace wrote it, you might want to see if you can find it. Most people on here who have done either / or / or both, seem very pleased with the results. Judging by your resume, you posses sufficient mechanical prowess to effect repairs.

I have done Both . My '01 Midnight is my Long Distance ride . I put a Roadwing on the rear and Racetech .95 Springs with Gold Emulators in the front . This took my TANK RoadStar to a Great Handling Agile Heavy Cruz. . It does Ride a little FIRM , but when I get into Testing Curves and Corners , I'm always Happy with the results . Now , my '02 Silverado is a Progressive Ride . High Performance front Springs and 465 Rear Shock set about Mid Dampening . This Bike is my Short Haul weekend Ripper . Close to 200 lbs lighter then the '01 simply because I don't Load it down with Traveling Stuff . It does ride a lot Smoother and Softer then the Beast , But the Control and Ability is There. My Two Scents ! Both are SOLO Bikes all the time .

Can you comment on the difference between the performance of your progressive springs vs stock and what springs did you use?

I've done both, and if I had to do it all over again, there's no question I'd go with Progressive springs and 10wt oil. RaceTech is 10 times the work at 3 times the cost and the difference is negligible.

As for improvement over stock, the difference is night and day, even at slow speeds, and especially under breaking; no more front end dive. And if you haven't already done it, you really need to do the Roadwing upgrade as too. If I ever bought another R* it's the first thing I'd do. Actually it's the first thing I did after buying my second R*.

Thanks Doc, I’ve done the roadwing & some other things too. The EBC pressure plate was installed on your recommendation when I was doing the oil pump gear. I’m sure I can figure out the install part of this. What progressive spring did you use?

Only 2 choices so standard I would assume.

Yes, the standard is the one to use.

A side note on this. I ordered the standard kit from Progressive yesterday morning about 8am. UPS Ground shipping is free, but they have a couple expedited shipping options at an added cost. They ship from the greater LA area. I just chose free UPS ground & figured i would get them in about a week. 26 hours later they were on my doorstep in Minnesota! I couldnt believe it. Well done Progressive & UPS! Now to get them put in. I’m probably going to wait until it cools back off. It may hit 50 here by Saturday & I want to fire Sadie up and do a little early season riding first!

One question Doc. The progressive spacer length given for roadstars is 6.5”. That would have the spacer extending about 1-1/4” above the top of the fork tube. That doesnt seem right. Shouldnt the spacer be closer to flush with the top of the tube with spring & washer in place and tube fully extended? This would make the preload about 3/4”. Thoughts?

I wrapped this up over the weekend, and other than having a difficult time with one of the upper slide bearings it went
pretty well. The biggest difference I noticed today (1st day out on it since the upgrade) was that I had no clue how much front end dive I actually had.... until I no longer had it. Whoa what a difference!

I also did the Progressive springs w/ heavier fork oil.
I noticed the difference before I even got to the pavement on the street.

After opening up my forks to do the conversion, one fork dumped perfectly clean oil, the other looked like coffee pouring out.
Apparently the Teflon coating on my slide on that side was JUST worn off and starting to rub metal on metal.
Any time you do a spring upgrade I'd strongly suggest new seals and slides.
The cost is easily outweighed by the risk of wear & tear on the inside of the aluminum fork legs.
