  • Secondary/Emergency seat release cable lanyard

I'm now making two different versions of the secondary/emergency seat release lanyard. A short version, and a longer one that attaches to the helmet hook. I got new materials for them consisting of black nylon covered SS cable, and ferrules.

You can easily make your own, or buy one of these that have been refined to specific lengths/loops for no-nonsense installation and function.

If you're interested in purchasing, I take paypal for payment. Please DM me for my paypal ID and which version you would like (short/long)

I'm not trying to get rich on these, I'm making these to help out my fellow Roadstar bruddahs and sistahs. The small fee is to help pay for my time and materials. I have youtube videos showing how to install them.

Price is $10 with free shipping CON-US (if using Paypal good/services price is $11 with free shipping)

It disappeared because it is posted in the classifieds. You need to click the road star emblem on the upper left of the screen to have everything reappear.

Yeah thanks I figured that out. I was switched from the 'Forums' tab to the 'Classifieds', yet most of the other posts were still listed there on the left....

I'd like to buy one of the long lanyards but I don't do PayPal. Is there a way I could send you a check?

I received mine, nice little cable. Haven't installed it yet but based on the video it looks like it'll only be a couple of minutes to get it on there. I'll see if I can take a video of my install. This saved me a ton of time vs. trying to make my own, and more so if at some point the seat simply failed to release for some reason.

      Thanks so much!

I finally pulled my bike out of its resting place. Man, did it need a cleanup. Had to replace the fuel filter and install this lanyard (four months later). Our weather finally got good so I pulled the Jeep out to get going on the bike.

I didn't go back to reference the video on installation of the long one. It seemed basic so I just went by memory. So I did a quick 'install' and found that it really wasn't doing much. My key seemed to work just as good, if not better. It seemed the wire cable coming from the key was putting up too much resistance against this cable, like a stiff-arm pushing against the mechanism. Also, the metal sleeve holding the loop ends together was jamming against a couple of other things in the mechanism. A shorter sleeve might be better.

In looking deeper, it was clear that the release lever was slightly corroded and creating a lot of friction when trying to release. So I pulled both bolts and slid the entire mechanism out to free it all up for inspection and lubing. Shot some penetrating oil on everything and worked it several times, making it super smooth and resistance-free. Hooked the cable back on and found a path of less resistance out of the bike and over to the helmet pin.

With the seat back in place, I actually found it was a bit tough to access with my 'fat' fingers. Maybe a little longer cable would help that, but in the end there was no need. What I do is slide my finger under the cable at the helmet pin, where it's easiest to access, then slide it all the way to the left, keeping it under the cable, and give it a slight tug from there, where the angle is short and direct to the latch itself, and voila, a light click and the seat is free. Works great!

Now I have two ways to free-up that seat latch when needed, and no longer risk damaging my key.

In general, I'd recommend that others pull both bolts, free-up the mechanism, and lube it all up while working the latch a number of times. Mine 'looked' clean of crud, but the hidden surface between the plates had the slightest corrosion and that friction was what was really making it hard to release.

Thanks for this, glad I bought it! It'll clearly last the life of the bike.

I had an issue with a sticky seat latch that I couldn't seem to cure so I put a new latch on and boy what a world of difference. I fought that thing for years. I also have installed one of these lanyards. Though my key works great now I only use the lanyard.
