Do you think the big manufactures are trying to target the younger generation with these retro bikes?
While I was at the motorcycle show here in Dallas, I noticed that just about every group has a version of a bike from long ago.
My opinion is that there are just not that many younger riders anymore that want to learn how to ride, if I had to put a percentage on the amount of motorcyclist at that show while I was there, that were my age or just a little younger, I would say it was about 80 - 90%my generation (X). I just don't see anyone really wanting to ride motorcycles anymore that are in the Generation Y group, if I do, I see them riding sport bikes. Maybe this vintage line of bikes which I really like will attract a new group of riders or maybe that is what these marketing groups are trying to target.
You sell these bikes so I would say you might have a better view of who is really coming in to the shop and what they are looking for.

Getting young riders is a HUGE issue for the entire industry right now... So I'd say, yes, they're focusing on the millennials and hipsters with the smaller size retro stuff.

In 2014, Yamaha/Star ran a "Build a Custom Bolt" contest for USA dealers.
We were encouraged to build a Bolt into whatever out imaginations could come up with & the Grand Prize was a new Bolt.
The SCR950 (like this one) was one of the top finishers getting thousands of votes from consumers on the Star MC website.

Most of the retro bikes I see like this one, the SR400 & the Sport-Heritage XSR900 are selling very well and mostly to younger riders.
There are a few older buyers who are interested in retro because they tend to like what they had as kids.
I can't tell you how many SR400 I've sold to guys over 40, but it's a lot and still right about half what I've sold to young riders.

Believe it or not, most young riders actually LOVE the older looking bikes, not sport bikes.
For the most part Millennials are not Tide-Pod chugging idiots.
They are absolutely the most product savvy and informed buyers I've ever seen in my life.
They do a TON of research before even calling a dealership.
When they walk in the door they usually know exactly what they want & also know what 100 other people have paid for it.

The prevalence of the internet has completely changed the way retail works. Bikes, shoes, toilet seats, Tide-Pods, everything. LOL
Selling bikes is easy, staying on top of the knowledge of the average young rider/buyer is the tough part now.

I would LOVE to have this bike! I saw it in the dealership and it is a really sharp ride! While not reall a true dual sport I bet it could be fine off the paved roads with a bit of caution. I'd really like to at least ride one.

That's pretty cool... Would love to see one in the old Kenny Roberts yellow black and white livery.

BTW, I'm glad to see Yamaha FINALLY figured it out and is making multiple models based on the same platform... Like they should have done with R*... Oh well, better late than never I suppose.

I just had to have the SR500E back in 1978. I was 28 at the time and thumpers were the tits in my neck of the woods growing up. They had that British look, and sound, I was familiar with from the ‘60’s.

One of the most fun peg scrapers I’ve owned in recent memory. Started first kick every time once I learned the best pre flight checklist. White Brothers had every aftermarket part you would want to bolt on it. Rode that thing everywhere.

It was cool to see them return a few years back, but was a little disappointed that they only showed up sporting the destroked version 400cc.

          Retro is cool, tho.

I think the 400 is a way for Yamaha to keep the model selling in a global market without having to make any regional variations.
500cc is TOO BIG for some countries, they'd freak if you imported a Roadstar. LOL
