  • Slippery clutch questions.

    Hi. This forum keeps on giving. Unreal help.

    Clutch is slipping when i hit it hard in 4th or 5th. 55000k with no history.

    I want to check oil pump gear anyway so which is the best way to go.

    For my mind as i am planing on keeping this bike as a rider untill i can no longer ride- go for - barnett purple pressure plate no problem there. Next is plates and no so sure here but thinking just buy a full barnett kit of plates both metal and friction and be done with it for good. Then i see carbon fiber for just a bit more. Other option is oem plates.

    Just like opinions on plates both friction and metal please.

    Also have checked free play on the bottom lever thingy and it is taking up at 29mm not 31.8 as per manual. Tried moving spline clockwise and then it was 37mm so think that is to far out. Could it be adjustment?

    Just chasing a bit of help as its hard to order stuff from Australia and or get help from shops where i am so want to make good descisions before starting.

    Steels usually don't need replacing but measure to see if in spec, some of us have had good luck with just buying the EBC 15 or 20% stronger diaphragm spring if your not a racer lol.https://www.ridersdiscount.com/ebc-c...-csk906-976924

      I can personally recommend the EBC spring. My clutch started slipping around 55,000 miles, not real bad, just in 4th and 5th when I really got on it. I just replaced the spring, nothing else, and it solved the problem. Cheapest, easiest way to go.

    Do you happen to have Facebook? I can send you some good short videos of replacing the clutch as well as the oil pump gear. You can measure the clutch friction discs to see if they're within spec and if not get new Yamaha ones. You will definitely want to at least sand down to rough up your steels. And a stronger diaphragm spring for sure The Barnett is probably the best option but three or four times is expensive as just a better diaphragm spring.

      Not sure about the using extra plate and not the wire part. Know more once i open it up.

        If you don't want to measure the friction discs you can always just order brand new ones. Here in the States it would be about $130 for the discs. I like 180 grit on a DA sander to finish the steels.If you end up replacing the friction desks you absolutely should replace the little small one behind the wire that has a little cradle and cushion spring. It's just as easy to cut the wire remove and leave it off and put a full size friction disc in place of the smaller friction disc that uses the cup and seat. At least I've done that on a couple with great success.

          When I rebuilt my top end the clutch was slipping (96,000 km).

          I replaced the stock spring with the ECB and it's working perfectly.

          Easier to get in Australia and a lot cheaper
