Transfer case chain

How do you determine if the transfer case chain needs replacing (too loose)? Getting ready to replace the shaft, pulley and both bearing. Want to make sure all is good before I put it back together.

Never heard of one going bad... Can't imagine it would stretch much at all. I wouldn't worry about it.

First it will be necessary to determine the chain size. If there are no numbers we can measure the distance between two center pins. If there are any numbers on the side plates they should tell us the size. Metric chain and US chain have different numbers. The first number on a US chain designates the distance between the centers of the rollers (pitch) in 1/8 inch increments. A number 40 chain measures 4/8" or 1/2" between roller centers. Once we determine the size we can hold the chain taut and measure the chain across several rollers. The further we can measure in a straight line the more accurate the measurement. If we measure across ten rollers of a number 40 chain we should have 5 inches. (1/2" X 10). If your measurement shows greater than 3% elongation (5.15") it is due to be replaced.

I guess you could inspect it and look for slack? If it wasn't making noise or having any problems I'd be hard pressed to spend $175 shipped for a new one. If the fluid has been changed regularly and not run low its NOT a common issue at all.
