Which saddle bags are you all running, and or what's your preference? Hard bags, soft bags, leather, plastic, fiberglass? Brands?

  • #2
I preferred stock leather when I first got the bike, a few years later I preferred Harley Police bags and added a Harley trunk, a few years later I preferred Royal Star Venture bags and trunk, a few years later I wrecked the 07 that went though my wallet lol, now I have an 04 with leather stock bags again without the studs this time, seems Iv'e gone full circle. Glad I could help.

I've had soft bags and currently have hard bags. I much prefer the hard bags because they're better supported and lockable. They are 2016+ HD replica bags. [see my sig pict] You can pick up a set, with mounting brackets, for about $350 on eBay or Amazon. Search the site for aftermarket HD bags to find lots more info.

I've got the Tsukayu Jumbo Strong bags. Excellent construction and huge inside. I tend to bring too much crap with me, so I like them.

I had the factory soft bags for about 4 years then when I started customizing the bike I found a set of Corbin fleetliner bags that were off of a Harley. With a little custom work they fit the bike great. Now I would say I love the hard bags. I believe Corbin made the beetle bags for the Yamaha roadstar but have been discontinued a while ago.

Just one, the left side. The zipper that holds them to the chincy leather strap that goes under the back seat failed. Needless to say the bags went to garbage when I got home. They were aftermarket but didnt have much for branding, I dont even remember what they were.

I have OEM hard bags lowered 2”. I like big butts! I never liked the long skinny HD ones.

As you can see, there are many ways to go picking bags. If money is no object, the world is your oyster. But many folks ride Road Stars 'cause money is in short supply. If you fit that category, peruse Craiglist for used H-D bags. Most can be made to fit.

I had leather bags on my 1st R* and lusted for a set of factory hard bags but couldn’t handle the price. Now that I have a midnight with hard bags I realize that the leather bags weren’t so bad after all.

As well as being better built, I find that the leather bags are quieter on the pot hole pocked roads we have around here. They are also more forgiving when sharing space in the garage with a snowblower or anything else with sharp edges. Don’t ask me how I know this.

Good used oem leather bags are getting harder to find but when the right ones come along I think I’ll go back. I had hd hard bags (on a hd) and I found them fussy to open and close...but that's just me.

After blah blah blahing about practical stuff..it comes down to what looks good, and that’s a personal thing. I just missed a set of new (!) leather covered hard Tour Deluxe bags which would have been beautiful on my bike.

Old HD bags are a PITA due to that overly complicated hinge/latch and the way they open. Fortunately, the new 2016+ are a *way* better design, much simpler and you can open them with one had while seated on the bike. I've often had to flip mine open while sitting at a stop light, to grab my gloves, or stow a jacket, etc. It's pretty nice actually. I'm big on practicality and fucntion.

Fortunately the HD police bags could be opened on the fly with a fully gloved hand also any years, that is why they were on bike for a time.

Yah the new harley bags are nice. They got it right. In fairness to the old ones, they aren’t fussier than the leather soft bags which require one hand to hold open. Try that at a stop light or when riding

I like these because they're classic & almost nobody else has them.
Hard shell, locking & easy to remove for cleaning.
