  • Project - Road Star XV1600 "Oscuro"

    Hello!
I am new here. Please do not scold at once.

This year I bought the XV1600 in not very good condition. Traveled all summer season. Now I decided to completely disassemble the motorcycle and put it in order. I want to make a stylish black and white motorcycle.
Please tell me, is it possible to paint a standard muffler with a matte black color? So that the paint does not peel off after a few months.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

Every exhaustive seen that was painted at home looks bad after a few months. Not sure if high heat powder coat would last for years or not....

Rust-oleum for BBQ grills will hang on there a while. Plus it's cheap so if you do need to touch it up it's no big deal.

You might get away with doing what you are thinking if you have the chrome sandblasted off. If you go thru sandblasting I think powdercoat would be the way to go with it.

You better scuff the f*%$ out of the chrome before painting. Try sanding with like a palm sander and 80 grit paper. I would use high temp primer (self etching if you can find it) to fill the sanding scratches then high temp grill paint.

Can it be ceramic coated? Will powder coat tolerate the heat from the header?

Just now I’m looking for where to do this in Russia.
Sandblasting equipment is available. I saw the muffler powder coating - in a year it starts to peel off. (((((

Do you have to have Stock OEM exhaust?
There are several mororcycle exhaust companys that make satin black ceramic coated exhaust for our bikes.

I didn't realize you were in Russia. That makes it more difficult and more expensive.

You need a workbench to get up off of the floor.

Ceramic is the way to go. Powder coat will stay with you for a good while, but the first time you get the pipes wet (riding in the rain) while they're hot, they will turn flat-black, and eventually turn grey.
Ceramic will retain the original finish (gloss;satin;or flat) much longer & will be much more durable.
                      Enjoy the ride !!
I love the smell of smoked pork in the morning !

Anyone else see "Oscuro" and think Cigars? (Name of a dark wrapper)
There were a few aftermarket exhaust makers that did black exhausts for our bikes, but I don't know about availability in your part of the world. Another option would be to wrap the exhaust, old school style: its cheap and you can pick the color.

Seriously though, just trying to give the guy some options.

@ Trex Star: I guess you have a point there. I don't care for the look of minimalist bobbers either. Others think they're a beautiful work of art.
