  • Homemade Lower Wind Deflectors

After selling my 01 RS and purchasing a newer 06 RS I quickly realized how much I missed my lower wind deflectors. Since we were going on an all day ride I decided the day before to just make some. I had some 3/16” lexan and some 2”x2” aluminum L-angle laying around. I mean, they aren’t the prettiest lowers, but they definitely did the job and I saved myself $$$ for the factory lowers. I might do some in silver, but the black works for now. Shape is reminiscent of the bucks lowers. Nice.

Perfect angle, perfect size, looks great. Could you provide some dimensions and comment on its effectiveness? Also how high is your windshield measured from the top of the headlight? Are you using a reinforcement plate to sandwich the Lexan?

You should have seen the ones I made. They were so ugly I was prompted to buy a new windshield with a curved top and a vent.

Wow, thanks for the complements everyone!

                                Chooch:
The lexan is 4" at the widest and 12 1/4" long. The measurement from the top of my headlight to the top of my windshield is 21 1/2".

                                The L-angle is 2" x 2" x 7"

I didn't have any extra material to sandwich the lexan, although I may do that at some point, but I'm not sure if it's needed, time will tell. Since the L-angle is 2" wide and 7" long it provided a good solid backing surface. I drilled and countersank the two holes in the 3/16" lexan and tapped the 1/8" thick L-angle for the mounting screws. I was worried that the lexan may crack with only the screws holding it, no gasket and no additional piece to sandwich it. But there was no deflection, they're very solid.

Effectiveness? Well, it was a night and day difference!! Before I would get A LOT of wind coming from the bottom up, to the point that it would make my glasses shake at speeds over 50. I even bought goggles because I wear contacts and the constant wind would dry out my eyes = no good. Honestly, I didn't know how the lowers would perform or how long they would last since I didn't have any time to test them out before our ride. We rode 185 miles the next day and they preformed EXACTLY like I wanted. Average speeds of 55-65mph with times up to 75mph. When arriving home they are sill solid, no cracks and nothing loose. How long will they last? I guess time will tell. If they crack/break I'll just make another set, sandwich them and see how that works.

I'm thinking you could sandwich it with a narrow strip of Lexan if needed, should you have any extra. Nice job!

Thanks for the information. My windshield is only 16 inches high. I don't want to look through a windshield. I made some lower deflectors similar to the ones shown in Duke's attachment and made mounts similar to yours but was never able to cure the buffeting at any angle...until I switched them (left to right). They are now behind the forks at the same angle as yours and the buffeting is GONE. I can feel the turbulence above my helmet with my hand but I don't even get bugs hitting my face shield. But yours look so much better. I like the shape and placement. So I want to know if yours diminished the buffeting or eliminated it entirely.

Even though my windshield is 21 1/2" it's about as short as I can go (I'm 6'-3). I have no buffeting on my head at all. Before installing the lowers my glasses would move around and I would get blasted with air from below up to my face, it was very annoying. I can now cruise at 65mph and have virtually no wind in my eyes and my glasses don't move. We rode for 8 hours and my contacts/eyes didn't dry out at all. Did I expect the lowers to completely eliminate all wind? No, it's a motorcycle, but it's literally night and day.

The lowers have deflected the air more towards the outside of my legs. For example, if I'm cruising along with no gap between my thighs and tank (not squeezing the tank) there's VERY minimal wind. However, if I pull my thighs away from the tank I get blasted with wind....which is nice at times when it's hot. My old RS had lowers and it was the same way. It had a Suzuki Boulevard C90 windshield with built in lowers that I retrofitted to fit my bike....because I got the windshield and lowers for $25.

Perfect. I've got a good starting point. I'm using a Memphis Shades windshield I got for $30 at a used bike shop. I cut it and fabricated some mounts and lowers. Now I'm just trying to improve the appearance.

Shores, they look better than anything on the market. I have some stainless pieces just like yours that I made for a different bike that I could reuse. Would you provide dimensions (length of stainless angle and size of plastic)? Eric is one lucky dude.
