Stretched rear fender installation?

A question for anybody who has installed a stretched rear fender ( usually with the stretched hard bags, as far as I've seen )...I'm very curious how the fender is installed and secured. Does it just sit over the stock fender and bolt in, or is the stock fender removed first? I have no interest in the stretched hard bags, but...do the bag mounts have some function in bolting up the fender itself? I THINK I've seen that they just go over the stock fender, but Id love to hear from those with experience.

I came across a few that were for a Harley FLHX, and the seller said they fit a Roadie also...so, that grabbed my interest! And the price is pretty reasonable. I just want to know what I'd be up against if I decided to go this route.

Depends on your definition of "fit". If it's made for H-D it's highly unlikely it will fit on a Road Star without some help. Just about anything can be made to fit anything depending on how much skill you have as a fabricator, or how much money you have to pay someone to do it, or combinations thereof. However, there is a cost free way to stretch your stock fender:

1. Secure front wheel so bike will not roll backwards.

2. Sit down behind bike and grasp both sides of the fender very firmly.

3. Pull really really hard until desired amount of stretch is achieved.

Seriously, with enuf time, $$$ and patience one can make just about anything "fit"...im just looking at the options that would be the least of all three, and be a workable solution. I figure something made for HD is gonna take a little massaging to get it right, I'm just basically looking for info from anyone who's actually done it.

Far as I know you will need to cut the stock fender off to the stock subframe in order to fit an overlay fender, I'm assuming you're going with the HD bags?

Hmmmm...ok, good to know, didn't realize I'd be possibly chopping the fender, tks!

Negative on the HD bags...got some large slant leather bags I like. Never really warmed up to the deep, stretched hard bag look. To each his/her own of course, I just don't really dig it.

The long stretched fender though, totally dig that.

Fiberglass. I can see how it might lay over the existing fender, and most likely bolt down at the passenger backrest mounts.

I agree...big chunk of change, for what it is. I'm definitely NOT sold on this one, but at least the guy did say it fits a roadie, and other metric cruisers.

Dude on the FB group suggested getting another roadie rear fender, and cutting and welding the two to whatever length I wanted. Hell, I even thought about the old hinged fender on panhead FL's...
just thinking about all the different ways to skin this cat.
