  • 2019 NW Starfest planning and ideas

I called the Konkleville hotel. They don't offer block rates, but they do block out rooms for group reservations. It would be best if we can give them a date range before the end of year. He said reservations for summer start coming in after the new year.

So we should get the ball rolling on dates. Use this poll to vote for your preferred date or dates.

What is your preferred start date for the 3-day event?

    =========

2019 NW Starfest is less than a year away. Time to start planning!

This thread is a place to post your ideas for routes, lodging etc. I'll start.

I was chatting with Kenny (the Goldwinger) and he told me about this place called Konkolville Motel in easter Idaho. Check out their site. Biker friendly. One of Kenny's groups lodges there for rides. He said it's a great place. Rates are reasonable. $68-$98 in the summer.

Day ride from there to Lolo Hot Springs and back. About 280 miles. Lolo pass is a bucket lister. It's worth any distance you'll ride to get there.

Another day ride. Start at the hotel and do a loop through the mountains, Cardiff Mill, back to hwy 12. Then down to Elk city for lunch. Then back up hwy 12 with a possible side jaunt through Nezpearce. I haven't ridden that side jaunt yet, but I'd scout it first them first. About 280 miles total, unless we skip the side jaunt.

I think the only concern would be the heat that time of year. I took a chance on it, knowing that low 90's was typical and we ended up at 104 on Friday. I think the event went well but the heat was pretty oppressive and we may need a year to forget about it Now I will be there, wherever it is regardless, but we may want to consider that factor.

Yeah, I thought about that too. Average highs in July west of the mountains is about 90. From OroFino down to Kooskia.

Lolo pass can be cooler than the surrounding weather. I've seen snow beside the road in early June. Average high for Elk City is 80.

Altitude at Orofino is only 1000. Gonna be hot, Let’s just have the 2019 event on an early Sunday morning in a shopping mall with all the senior walkers!

Maybe I'll modify a walker with a 1600 engine to help me motivate around. Will have to put on quiet pipes on though.

Those bikes might make a lot of noise in a shopping mall, we could do hot laps and have prizes for best escalator climb. And the bikes wouldn't get carb puke in the air conditioning.

Im liking those routes, change it up some and go to Idaho, seams like it would be cool enough in the trees and some altitude. And I think it always rains in Missoula. And the heat doesn't bother me.

Lolo would be a great ride. Probably should check to make sure there are no major road improvements happening during the time that’s chosen. One year we rode through it in Mid-July and we had to ride through 30+ miles of gravel and fresh chip seal. Also we have stayed at Lolo Hot Springs a couple of times and have not had the greatest experience… although the pool is clothing optional on Tuesday's if that’s your thing Where ever it will be next year we will do our best to be there!

Also, just a thought. Instead of having a home base where we all rode back to, moving as a group each night to a new destination could be interesting. Might be able to gather a few more members from either direction depending on the nightly stops. But I would insist on us all staying/camping together in one spot. That was amazing being able to visit for hours after each ride!

Yes, all staying in one spot was the best. Been trying to do that from the start and it was great being able to sit around and visit and not worry about riding back, just stagger to the room and pass out O.K. will I didn't see anyone staggering, just saying, nice to have a drink afterwards with good friends.

They're actually doing a major improvement project this year through October. So I wasn't able to ride it home. But it should be in great shape next year.

I also like the idea of saying in different places. But that means we'd have to pack up each morning and ride loaded up. But if you're touring Montana it's what you have to do sometime. A day loop can easily stretch to 400 miles.

I wonder if we could make it three days of riding rather than two?

I checked out the hotel and it looks great! Biker friendly and the rooms are very reasonable! Looks like a great area, and I'm totally up for up and back rather than a loop on hwy 12! I also saw The Jack Saloon, a few miles up from Lolo Hot Springs, it looks pretty cool too. It's a few miles further but 12 should be faster (and cooler!) being a main highway.

The Jack Saloon is a cool place. They have lodging but I think it's only 4 or 5 cabins. But we could definitely go there for lunch rather than Lolo Hot Springs.

Ditto, I'm liking the idea even though we did talk about going South. I remember driving Lolo many years ago and how stunning it was.

Lolo was beautiful the few times we have taken it when there has been no road work.

So, are we going to write this in stone and commit? I waned to do Southern Oregon/Northern california, but the fire scars would probably make that depressing. Lolo pass is a bucket list item for me and I know others as well. What say the rest of you reprobates?

Obviously I’m for it. People at NWSF have brought up the idea of a Montana ride the past few years. This goes into MT a bit. Not quite Glacier or Beartooth, but still a great area.

If we do this I’m happy to coordinate stuff with hotel. I’d also scope the routes next spring to plan gas/food stops and sightseeing.

I am in for sure! The wife too if she can get the time off. I would be a fan of the original proposed plan in this thread. Lolo would be fun!

I'm in for sure, nail down some dates so I can put it on the calendar.

We just got back from a week long ride, looped around Oregon, One of my favorite routes was up the little dragon, Hwy 245 from Unity up to Hwy 7 and Hwy 203 from Baker City to La Grande. But today we rode from Biggs Jct down WA14 to Wind River Hwy over to Woodland, that was a nice ride, then we got poured on going into Longview and most the way back to Salem on the back roads. Didn't want to end it by coming home but it feels good to sit in a familiar place.

Sounds like it was a good thing I canceled our 20 rider group to Astoria for lunch. Got a lot done on an outdoor house project instead. Astoria had good weather, but getting there and back would have been wet.
