Tyke’s 2022 Canada and Starfest ride

I left town and had a great ride through some familiar Montana territory. Fortunately the weather was beautiful. We’ve had severe thunderstorms every afternoon for the past few weeks. But it cleared up today. Traffic was light. I made it to Canada customs 15 minutes before they closed!

I’m staying in Creston tonight. Tomorrow the real ride begins. 300 miles starting along Kootemay Lake. Then west through the CA Rockies ending in Salmon Arm.

Do you mean Sandpoint? Not quite that far. I took 200 from Missoula to just past Noxon. Then I turned north.

Very much resembles what we'll be riding through at Starfest! How have the temperatures been up there?

Low 60’s in the morning. Mid 80’s in the afternoon.

Day 2 was epic! I went from Creston to Salmon Arm. Only 300 miles but it took me almost 11 hours. An excellent mix of twisties, sweepers, awesome scenery, a couple of ferries, and very little traffic. Such an awesome day.
The absolute best part was along Kootenay Lake. I doubled back a couple of times to redo some sections. Sooo fucking good. I have to come back someday.

Day 3 was great too. Stretched Roady's leg's a bit. 385 miles and 10 hours. I want from Salmon Arm to Hinton. But via Lake Louise and Jasper along the Icefield Parkway. Think of Glacier Park but so much bigger.
Not much technical riding today. Just lots and lots of amazing scenery.

Hinton is a sort of a hole. But I had to go for a hotel that I could afford. Anything around Jasper is stupid expensive.

How is gas up there? Same as here, better, worse? I know they go by liters and imperial gallons, so I guess it'd be what's it cost to fill the tank?

It varies a lot by location because of taxes but It’s more expensive than ours in Montana. I did the conversions and it’s anywhere from $5.75 to $6.26 gal.

Montana has CHEAP gas! A couple years ago when passing through I paid like a buck-eighty for gas. Better than Idaho! Premium up here at Starfest is like $6.89 or something, and regular around $5.50 IIRC. We always gas-up before we get up here.

Day 4 was good. A mellow ride through some more great scenery. 313 miles but it only took about 7 hours.

I had a great breakfast and an even better Americano in Hinton and then hit the road about 9am. Started off pretty cool and drizzly. But that didn’t bother me. Then it was through Jasper and back into BC. I’m in Kamloops tonight and heading to Ione tomorrow. A bit longer than today. Should take 8 hours or so.

How's the wildlife been on the roads up there? Any close calls?

A few doe sightings. Nothing close enough to worry about. I saw some cow elk in Jasper Tues and Wed. They're very tall and lanky compared to our Montana cows. One cow stood at the side of the highway and waited for traffic to stop before she crossed, verrrryyyy slowly. lol
